[Draught at DeSotos] Pours a deep dark amber-brown with an average size diminishing creamy tan head. Lots of lacing. Aroma of toasted malt and leafy hops first followed by some coffee. Flavour of toasted malt, more hops then expected, some coffee and a dry, bitter finish. Medium bodied. I almost didn’t order this because it has Brown Ale (I’m not a big Brown Ale fan) in the name but I’m glad I did, it’s quite good and closer to a Black IPA.

A reddish brown ale with a thin lacing light mocha head. In aroma, nice caramel malt with light burned caramel and nutty notes, grassy floral hops, light coffee grind, very nice. In mouth, a nice roasted caramel malt with grassy resinous floral hops, light coffee grind, nice and solid. On tap at Wellington Gastropub.

On tap at Buster Rhino’s. American brown. Porter brown, nice head. Lovely aroma of chocolate covered almonds, resin and citrus. Decent body. Very tasty, drinkable beer.

(On tap @ Bar Hop Brewco, Jan 16 2016) Pours clear cola brown with a large off white head and lots of lace. Aroma is toast and light caramel, a little coffee and nuts, a bit of pine hops. Palate is moderate caramel and toasted malts, coffee grounds, pine needles, light citrus fruitiness in the middle. Finish is very dry and heavily toasted grains, cacao beans, a bit of pine needle. Fairly light body with average carb. My expectation was of something more hop-forward and with bigger body, like a more toasted than roasted black IPA. This was a little weak in comparison.

Bottle from the brewery store. Vibrant mahogany with a dark beige head. Lightly roasted malts with a strong earthy and light resin hoppy presence, smooth, slightly nutty and bittersweet chocolate, high carbonation, moderate body, easy to drink, very smooth bitterness and a very good blend of a brown and a stong IPA - almost becomes a mellower IPA with some brown characteristics.

Spab (4081) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 10, 2016
Growler from the Summerhill LCBO. Pours a orangey dark brown with good-sized eggshell-coloured head. Aroma is chocolate, toasted grains, earthiness and a bit of resin. Flavour is cocoa, very toasty graininess, a bit of fruit, lots of earthiness and a resiny/herbal bitterness. Average plus body. A nice hopped up brown ale.

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2016 2016-01-07. Dark mahogany brown body with a small beige head. 3+ Aroma of green leafy hops and dry toasty roast malt. Flavour is quite dry and bitter lots of toasty malt, a moderate green hop character. Average bodied palate, good carbonation. 3+ Almost black IPA like at times but with more of a brown ale malt profile. Pretty interesting, different from what I expected. 7/4/7/3/15-16 On tap at Volo, Toronto.

0.5 bottle. Clear, very dark brown color and a large, frothy, off-white head leaving a dense lacing. Aroma of dark malts, coffee, hops, pines, and grass. Taste is sweet, malty, coffee, hoppy, earthy. A medium body, a slick texture, and a soft carbonation. Finish is medium long and nicely balanced between malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Overall, not a bad beer, refreshing.

Deep brown pour with a thick sticky tan head. The aroma is lovely - lots of rich cocoa and a light herbal hoppiness in back. Assertive bitterness on the back. A lovely bit of roast flavour through the finish. Nicely dry with a lot of soft hoppy resin on the back. Very nice.
