On tap for Hard Liver ’12, pours a clear dark mahogany / maroon with a small tan head. Aroma of dark fruits, hazelnuts, caramel malts, balanced well. Flavour of a beautiful mix of dark fruits, hazelnuts, toffee, toasted nuts and some subtle liqueur. Full-bodied with a perfect amount of sweetness. Excellent. killjoy966 (677) - Washington, USA - NOV 17, 2011
Snifter @ Rock Fish. Deep caramel color and aroma. Incredibly sweet. Probably in the "twilight" years of its life. Not much carbonation to speak of. Decent barleywine but slightly too sweet for me. MartinT (10155) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 2, 2011
My Bottom Line:carruthm (1400) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAR 21, 2010
Hazelnuts, caramel and cherry liqueur touches are spread onto lengthy peppery hop resins in this complex, plump Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the cloudy maroon (on the ’09) and the shiny crimson (on the ’10).
-The body was full and warming, perhaps sweeter that your middle-of-the-road Barley Wine.
-Oranges appear once in a while.
-The ’10 was not as well developed as the ’09, but showed a lot of promise.
-This rating is for the ’09 vintage, sipped on in late February ’11.
On tap at Beveridge Place Pub.

UPDATED: JAN 28, 2012 On tap at Hard Liver 2010. Dark ruby pour with a tiny ring of bubbles. Now *theres* the balance Ive been looking for all day! Fruit and caramel malts are well balanced in the aroma against the alcohol and hop content. Finally, a barleywine that covers its alcohol despite being fresh. Still has a bitter aftertaste, and remains pretty clean, but theres a robustness here that counters the ABV really well. Tasty! Re-rate: A year later, this has mellowed beautifully, is absolutely delicious, and deserving of a few more points.

Sweet barley, rice, red licorice aroma. Brown in color. Barley in the flavor and besides that it is just sweet and syrupy. The only beer I had that was not watery. DarkElf (3067) - La Jolla, California, USA - AUG 7, 2008
18-Jan-08 (Draft: 2008 Great Alaskan Beer and Barley Wine Festival in Anchorage, AK) Very aromatic nose of rich, sweet, caramely malts and background sherry that indicates possibly aging. Mimicking the aroma, the flavor is prototypical for a big, delicious barley wine: the malt is sweet and caramely in the foreground and is backed by a strong fruitiness and mild hop bitterness for a bit of balance in the finish. Full-bodied, gently carbonated and smooth on the palate, but not cloying. Dark amber to light brown in color and hazy. The tall, tan head holds a wide, bubbly ring and filmy layer. This is really excellent. If there weren’t a lot more beers to try at this festival, I’d go back for seconds! AmEricanbrew (7080) - Same Trailer, Different Park, Louisiana, USA - JUN 19, 2008
Copper color with a frothy head. Nice raisony sweet spicy malt aroma. Very smooth full body. Flavor mirrors aroma with aged Barleywine flavors of vinous sweet malts and apple pie spices with some earthy molasses. Has a light alcohol tang to finish. Nice. Tap at uber. Dark red/auburn pour with a nice fluffy head. Lots of malt on the nose, caramel, brown sugar, and some earthy floral hops too. The flavor is a nice mix of sweetness with brown sugar, some dark fruits, and a good kick of bitter floral hops. Lots of lingering resins. A nice barley wine.
