The name of this brew and its description on the label suggest a pleasantly sweet beer with a maple syrup note. Nothing could be further from the truth. This beer has not even a hint of sweetness or maple in it. Instead, it’s acridly bitter with a bizarre grapefruit aftertaste. This is perhaps the worst case of beer mislabeling I’ve ever seen. I have no idea what the people at Anchor were thinking. Terrible, steer clear. ogre71 (359) - Utah, USA - SEP 12, 2015
Pours a nice dark amber slight head. To bitter not hoppy didn’t notice any maple flavor wouldn’t get it again. MetalNHopHead (1976) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - SEP 9, 2015
Amber Ales are such a broad, common zone and everyone has their own preference. I definitely lean toward the hoppy space, yet I don’t like an Amber that could pass as an IPA if tasted with a blindfold. BigLeaf Maple seems like an Amber Ale tailor made for my palate. There’s biscuit-like malts, caramel, and a touch of syrup. The hops are lovely, too. They’re citrusy, bitter, and herbal. Scales are tipped toward hops, but the balance is still solid. Also, I can’t resist beers that make use of local flavors. foyle (422) - Wyoming, USA - SEP 7, 2015
Poured from 12 oz bottle into pint glass.
Appearance: pours a thick off white head that drops slowly with plenty of lacing. Cloudy amber color with plenty of streaming carbonation.
Aroma: citrus hops completely dominate, some malt in the background.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied and resinous with a dry, somewhat astringent finish.
Flavor: hops are also dominate in the flavor with malt more apparent than the aroma, but still a background element. I do not pick up the maple flavors at all.
Overall: well done American style Amber/Red ale, but no necessarily my personal preference. floydslip (401) - Washington DC, USA - SEP 1, 2015
Amber beer with a medium foamy light beige head. Hoppy nose of citrus, pine resin, and (surprisingly) vanilla. Flavor is definitely hop forward with some under ripe plum, pith, and leather buttressed by a hint of sweetness, although not enough to balance it out. I really wanted to taste the maple more. Decent, not great.

Nice ruby red hue in a tall snifter. 1 finger of white head. Caramel aroma. Dont detect the maple, has body and flavor of an Irish red. Gription79 (2891) - Bountiful, Utah, USA - AUG 30, 2015
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. The aroma is woody, pine, toasted malts, light caramel. The flavor is a little sweeter, maple, vanilla, woody, pine, a spice character in the finish. Spice like actual clove, a tingling sensation on my tongue. bubblehouse (1531) - louisville, Kentucky, USA - AUG 27, 2015
Not my favorite. I think the maple makes it slightly sweeter than I would have liked. Still good. 78samh (287) - Olympia, Washington, USA - AUG 25, 2015
12 oz bottle pours copper with a tan head. Huge aroma of floral hops. Taste is crisp and fresh, earthy with a nuance of maple. Strong bitter, spicy and dry finish. Really good amber ale. skatanarchy (212) - - AUG 24, 2015
