Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

Aroma of grassy hops upon cracking open the bottle. Smelled again and got a bit of nutty malt. Upon tasting, the malt is really on display here with the hops rounding it out nicely. There is more sweetness on the front end of the flavor than I was expecting. The hop flavor is apparent, but well balanced. I love this and will definitely be getting it again. I might even say this is better than Bell’s Best Brown Ale.

The head is robust, the body brown, it smells aromatic, sweet, darkmalty sweet-chocolate, fermented-plum. The taste is aromatic fruity, a bit bitter, less alcoholic, sweet-citrus, fruity-bitter, hoppy. Interesting and tasty! Great 12/12/12/13/12/13

Great flavour creamy malty taste finishing on caramel. I really liked this and was a bit surprised at other reviews .

Bottle poured into pint glass. Aroma is cheap chocolate and dark breads. Flavor is sort of limp and coarse with lightly roasted barley and some caramel malt floating atop a watery mouthfeel. Needs more body for sure.

Not a fan of browns. They always fall short. This one wasnt bad. Nothing of note. However it is a solid beer overall

Bottle poured a brown in color with a covering of tan head that retained a ring on the glass. Aroma has rich brown malt, light hops, and some earth. Mouth feel is medium with nice coating and medium low carbonation. Flavor gets rich on the malt, mild roast, lightly bitter, and a pinch of stale coffee.

Bottle shared with McTaps. Huge disappointment as this one seemed to be dull, just with a bit malt and in the aroma. Became better with higher temperature but still no good points in here. Simple, below average.

After liking other brown ales a lot O had some big hopes for this one. The looks are alright: Medium brown colour, low head and medium body. But the taste is disappointing because it is just too thin and lacks deepness. It has hints of bitter hops, nuts, sour almonds and copper. Too bitter and thin.

Bottled December 8, 2011.
Appearance: The body is a dark chestnut that’s opaque through the center, the tan head is tall and dense with great retention that leaves a huge mess on the glass as it dissipates.
Aroma: The aroma is malty with toffee, caramel, and some cocoa, perhaps some brown sugar, with a hint of tropical flavors and hints of oxidation..
Taste: The body is malty with toffee, brown sugar and dark fruits on the finish. It could be oxidation to some degree, it’s a bit grapey on the finish. It’s still good though.
Palate: Light to medium bodied with light carbonation.
Overall: I thought this was a bit fresher, I guess that may be throwing a lot of it off. It’s decent and I’ll try it again but there are some notes of oxidation that I’m not sure are intentional.

Pretty aromatic when I popped the cap. Bit of frothy line tan head. Glass is coated with lots of bubbles on the side. Slightly toasted grain aroma, chased by hops. Beautiful clear red color when held to a light bulb. Flavor of fresh oranges and mango. Perhaps even a bit of cherry. Bitterness comes out in the aftertaste. Have seen this for sale for a long time. It’s a shame it took me this long to try it!!
