Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

Bottle. Very dark brown with red tints and a firm beige foam. Aromas are weetabix and chocolate with lemon and wheat. Lightly smoky with cola and lime. Flavours are sweet malts with chocolate and cloying molasses. Fruity and malty in the finish. A bit sickly and thin. Average.

Dep brown pour with a thick, pillowy off-white head. The nose is fairly toasty with notes of spice, cocoa and a little bit of roast. Sweet malt and a little bit of earthy hoppiness add a soft fruity note on the back. Simple sort of brew, but a decent one. Medium bodied and slightly earthy. There is an almost minty character on the back. Okay.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is medium brown. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, toasted grain/bread), lightly malty (apricot), with notes of souring fruit and bile. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter, unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Surprisingly sour and dirty, and it has an unpleasant reflux-and-rotten-fruit odor. Embarrassing.

0,355l bottle from Beer Bier, Budapest. Clear, deep reddish amber color with big, creamy, light brown head. Hoppy, spicy, herbal odor. Malty, a bit sour aroma with the flavours of the roasted malt. Hiding honey and spicy hoppy flavour. Light bitter-sour taste. Medium body, slick texture, light carbonation. It1s a light but meaningful beer. Delicious and easily drinkable.

Frothy head, delicate aroma of wood, slight smoke, slightly burnt caramel. Looks lovely. Easy to drink with flavor containing both bready, slightly sourish malt elements and a pronounced citric, piney hop presence. Flavor is lightly-to-moderately sweet, moderately bitter.
