Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

On keg at The Southern Bar. Pours a beautiful dark ruby brown colour with a decent light tan head. Aroma of treacle, caramel, biscuity malt and alcohol. Similar flavours with moderate carbonation, light CO2 and a foamy mouth-feel. Tasty with a lingering toffee apple quality.

-biscuity malty aroma with buttery diacetyl and light citrusy hops -clear reddish brown color with big creamy yellowish head -malty woody flavor with light roasty notes and bread. Light citrus oaky hop -med body med c02 malty woody finish -decent beer, but won't buy again. Better brown ales out there for same or cheaper price ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

another entry from Anchor that leaves a bit to be desired. a decent brown, but for the money, there is better out there. flavor had a sort of skunky, dusty flavor in the front, like old dried out hops. not very pleasing. ill pass on this one next time.

RickTStiles (827) - Houston, Texas, USA - APR 18, 2012
pours clear brown with a lasting beige head and some sticky lacing. light aroma with sweet, malty notes with some nuttiness and maple. taste is hoppy for a brown ale with notes of dark, slightly roasty malt and some spices. finish is sweet with spice notes. a very subtle but enjoyable beer .

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 11/9/2011. Pours slightly hazy reddish brown color with a nice 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some slight spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of caramel, biscuit, molasses, toasted malt, herbal hop, pine, and light citrus. Some ok aromas, but there is some chemical-like off flavor noticeable. Taste of big caramel, biscuit, roasted nut, toasted malt, molasses, herbal hop, pine, and light citrus. Light bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, roasted nut, biscuit, citrus, and herbal on the finish for a short bit. Nice flavor balance with a good malt backbone. Medium carbonation and body; with a nice and fairly creamy mouthfeel. No alcohol warming noticed at all; very smooth to drink. Overall this is a fairly nice and enjoyable brown ale. Nice malt backbone as I like in brown ales; and very smooth to drink.
