COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future.
Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness.
For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, hops.

Had this just after Anchor’s "Small Beer" (proof that sometimes less is not more), and the difference in quality could not be more stark. This is one of the best Brown Ales. Malt. Just enough hop to balance (perhaps not enough?). Hop-heads will not like, but this malt-head loves it.

I don’t usually drink Browns but this one is good, VERY good. I little pricey but buy it and enjoy goodness.

Got to go straight into the flavor with this one. Brekle’s Brown starts off tasting like toffee-coated hazelnuts and finishes with sweet tropical fruit flavors coming from the Citra hop(s). In between, you get flickers of chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar. As you’d expect, the nose has rich malt and a touch of bright citrus. The deep brown body and creamy, off-white head are just as enjoyable. Ditto for the smooth, refreshing mouthfeel. It’s pretty hard not to get hooked by this Brown Ale’s candy-like flavors... even if you don’t usually go for the style.

Brekle’s Brown has a very thick, creamy, tan head and a clear, bubbly, brown appearance, with some lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, brown bread and a flash of hops; the taste is likewise of sweet brown bread, brown sugar, mild hop bitterness, and some caramel candy aspects. There were even some chocolate notes with this one. Mouthfeel is medium, and Brekle’s Brown finishes refreshing, semi-dry, and easy drinking. It’s a most excellent beer. RJT

From Labirratorium. In Teku glass. Playing 8 Bit Commando. Brown sugar, nuts, even dark fruits in a full mouthfilling body. The citra hops provides a well integrated refreshing herbal touch

Brekle’s Brown Ale pours out a nice dark brown color, mostly opaque but some light still makes it through. The lively foam is a light tan color, and lingers a bit longer than expected. Very little lacing left behind on the glass but that’s not surprising. Aromas are nicely malty, slightly sweet with just a touch of caramel and toffee. Flavors are great! The Brekle’s Brown Ale is flavorful but super smooth. Completely dominated by malty flavors, I’m not picking up any hops bitterness at all. That being said it’s not a candy-sweet style, as the Brekle’s finishes nicely dry. I can honestly say this is the single best beer I’ve every had from Anchor Brewing! It’s smooth yet flavorful, refreshing yet satisfying: I’m legitimately impressed! This is a brew that we’ll definitely be adding to our selection as soon as our distributors make it available to us. If you’ve never tried the Brekle’s Brown, I’d suggest stopping in for a try.

I can’t believe how low this is rated here. One of the deepest browns I have ever tasted. Sweet molasses on the nose with some caramel. Complex taste of sweet caramel and slight hops. About as far as you can push a brown flavor wise.
