To commemorate an important milestone in Anchor Brewings long history, a special ale seemed appropriate. Having found and experimented with a very rare and unusual hop variety called Nelson Sauvin, we knew that its unique character would impart a wonderful flavor and aroma to a pale ale brewed especially for the occasion: Humming Ale.

Lightly hazy golden color with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of toast, toffee, floral hops, citrus, and grass. Taste of toast, toffee, citrus, faint nelson, and a bitter finish.

Tap at Capones. Pours a hazy golden amber with a medium creamy off white lacing head. Aroma was very light. Some citrus and grape. Flavor was better. Nice hip flavor. Floral, citrusy and some white grape.

Amber pour with a frothy white head. The aroma is subdued, but has some lightly roasted caramel malt and floral hopping. The flavors are pretty well balanced between the caramel sweetness and the slightly fruity hop bitterness, with its unusual hints of grapes. Decent, if uninspiring.

Draught @ Sadonkorjuu 28.8. Poured hazy golden color with a frothy/dense white head. Aroma is apples and malt. Flavor is bread and malt, with some fruity notes. Slightly bitter finish. Somewhat heavy and tough to drink, not really what I had expected.

Im thinking there might be a reason why this hop variety is unusual...I hate to be a low score on an anchor brewing beer, but Maytag left so screw it. This is rather odd, but not really good. Appearance and aroma are nothing to mention. This is all based on a decent recipe and a weird hop that does make for some odd bitterness. Odd, yes. Great, no.

Draught at Sadonkorjuu 2010, Porvoo, Finland.
Hazy golden colour with average sized foamy head. Mild fruity not-so-bitter hops in aroma. Flavour is nice balanced mix of bitter fruity hops and malty body. Long-lasting bitterness in aftertaste.

Bottle. Big fruity hop nose, some golden grain and bright citrus, but winy notes would have to be imagined. Golden, clear pour with a rocky tannish head. Taste is surprisingly bitter and fierce for Anchor, with bright citrus and berry notes. Some really nice dank must. Medium body edging fuller, smooth with a touch of booze showing. Very dry. A good one.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2010 medium gold pour with a tight lasting white head. aroma is fairly light. floral citrus hop, and light biscuity malt. Flavour is citrusy hop, slightly spicey and floral towards the finish. Backed by a light malt sweetness. Bready, some crackery tones. Reminds me a lot of the Mikkeller Nelson Sauvin IPA only a bit more of a biscuity/crackery maltiness.

the dry hopping on this beer is what provides its strengths. sweet citrus in the aroma is fantastic, but it would have been great to taste citrus and resin notes to match. i could smell this beer all day and drink a couple, but there are definitely more memorable Pales out there.

12oz bottle. Much better than when I tried this at a distributor tasting a few months back. Pours a clear glowing orange biscuit color with a smaller fizzy white head with some stickiness. Aroma is honey and biscuit, light fresh grass, delicate. Flavor follows, on the delicate side, most certainly an Anchor beer, grainy biscuit light sweetness, light fresh grass, alcohol adds some effervescence, light white grapiness, lightly juicy, pleasant bitterness, a light cheesiness, some gritty graininess, lingering bitter aftertaste with notes of white grapes. Light bodied, spritzy carbonation, nice.
