Barrel-aged ale is not new. It is a centuries-old tradition, from a time when barrels were thought of simply as the containers in which ale was stored and transported from brewery to tavern. Our experiments at Anchor, however, revealed that a carefully considered blend of our own ales, aged in-house in our own ex-Old Potrero handmade oak barrels, results in a unique, complex, and delightfully new tradition: Our Barrel Ale. Available in 50.7-oz magnum bottles.

Keg at Tempest - SF. Pours clear, deep brown with a foamy topping. The nose holds ripe dark fruits, berries, toasted toffee. Medium sweet flavour with some plums, berries, more toffee. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish with low bitterness, more ripe, dark fruits. Tasty beverage.

SIBF 2016, Seattle. 2015 edition. Tan foam on deepest brown. Deep fruity old ale aroma. Banana, bitter chocolate, dark bread. Modest richness. Alc and bittering balance the sweet. Cool syrup, medicinal sweetness. nice.

Was looking forward to this one in vain, since I find it a bit one dimensional. Malt in focus with the classic sweetness from an American Strong Ale, but nothing there to balance it out.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2016 Draft at PIB 2016, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small tan head. Aroma brings out leather, cocoa, bready notes and English malt. Flavour is complex, with bready caramel malt, toasted English malt, cocoa and light barrels. Complex and well-integrated. Excellent.

Been wanting to try this one FOREVER. Got lucky and picked up two at Total Wine in Spokane. Pours nearly walnut brown with good clarity and khaki head.... Nice barrel notes nod politely toward the rye whiskey... caramel maltiness with plenty of dry toastiness is balanced perfectly by the whiskey and wood... subtle dried cherry essence with warmth... This one exceeded my lofty expectations.

Anchor Barrel Ale has a thick, spongy, beige head, a dark, reddish-brown appearance, and a touch of lacing left behind. Aroma is of dark malt, brown bread, black cherry, and oak whiskey barrel. Taste is of all that, with brown bread crust, and moderate bitterness. The alcohol level is more subvert, than overt. Mouthfeel is high medium and velvety, and Anchor Barrel Ale finishes wet and rich. RJT
