COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Franciscos celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the worlds smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Bottle. Clear Ruby Red in colour. Very Malty; caramel, toffee, candy sugar, toasted bready malts, vanilla. Very fruity; citrus-orange, dark fruits. Hoppy; spicy, piney resinous hops. Sweet. Viscous, oily and slightly syrupy. Very smooth; not at all harsh; rather subtle. Beautiful malt/fruit/hop balance. Enjoyed this a lot. Nice beer! (2008)

A bottle from Privado in Guting, drunk at home. Aroma: lovely fruity cake [specifically Dundee...?] Appearance: clear, reddish brown, minimal tan lacing. Palate: medium-bodied, oily, soft carbonation, long fruity finish. Taste: extremely well balanced, not too sweet - a plus point for me - a quality product.

Bottle, 0.355l. Clear dark ruby pour with virtually no head. Rich on the nose; malty sweet, herbal, boozy, lots of caramel. Medium to full body with slick and oily texture. Soft carbonation, quite lively on the tongue. Mostly sweet taste with a touch of alcohol bitterness. Aroma is heavy malt, caramel and toffee, brown sugar, liquor. Syrup. Herbal, bready. A bit peppery. Notable alcohol presence. Very rich, nicely balanced. Might be too sweet for some. Regular finish. Slight hops in the aftertaste, nice. Overall, delicious.

Bottle from la caisse de Bieres. Pours a very flat head with dense but elegant malts. Clear amber colored body. Nice density of round malts and blooming hops; not aggressive on alcohol or roasting. A easy drinking barley wine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
