San Franciscos celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the worlds smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

This was a very good purchase from brewery Id never tried. It reminds me of a Belgian Dubbel in some ways, but it could just be the style. Most barleywines Ive had in the past were over-hopped (Three Floyds being the one that stands out). Very thin head that dissipates to nothing. The aroma is sweet; raisin, plum. Light bitterness on the finish. Thick mouth-feel, a little syrupy, but not in a bad way. I get a lot of plum upon tasting. Alcohol is detectable, but not distracting.

Bottle. Clear red colour, firm tan head, good lacing. Aroma of dried and crystallized fruits, raisins, caramel, light notes of honey. Taste is heavy- sweet and medium- bitter, caramely and bready base, lots of candy fruits, raisins, dried fruits, slightly herbal finish. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is average. Great, sweet, fruity and complex example of the style.

Pite z butelki. Piękna barwa, jasne, rubinowe. W zapachu mocne nuty chleba, słodw, rodzynek i miodu. Super piwo.

Phenomenal all-around beer, doesnt fall in the nauseatingly sweet trap of many barley wines, a slight smoky plot in the overall fruity taste narrative provides the requisite complexity

Butelka 330ml (BB 03.2018). Klarowne o miedzianej barwie z cieniutkim kożuszkiem piany w kolorze ecru, całkiem trwałym choć tylko symbolicznie zdobi piwo. Aromat słodki, ciężki, słodowy, karmelowy w odczuciu podobny do aromatu miodu pitnego.

Im appreciative that a commonly available brewery has seen fit to consistently produce an English style Barleywine. And it happens to be a very good one that is attractively priced. Malty, fruity, rich with a subtle hop background. Wonderful, oily mouthfeel. Old Foghorn seems to get lost in the shuffle of higher priced 22oz English bw - but its a solid, high quality Barleywine with a pleasing malt forward character. When seeking out English Barleywines you cant go wrong with this choice. Drinking a March 2016 bottle, in March 2017 = smooth, sublime, delicious.

Pours deep amber, clear, tan low head. Fruity aroma, dry plums, cherries, some malts, honey, toast, alcohol. Medium sweetness, medium sourness, low bitterness. Medium body, supprisingly big carbonation, thick. Good price/quality ratio.
