COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Franciscos celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the worlds smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

This was a very good purchase from brewery Id never tried. It reminds me of a Belgian Dubbel in some ways, but it could just be the style. Most barleywines Ive had in the past were over-hopped (Three Floyds being the one that stands out). Very thin head that dissipates to nothing. The aroma is sweet; raisin, plum. Light bitterness on the finish. Thick mouth-feel, a little syrupy, but not in a bad way. I get a lot of plum upon tasting. Alcohol is detectable, but not distracting.

Dark amber with medium head. Aroma: cookies, malt, pineapple, some caramel. Taste is moderately sweet with medium body and bitterness, some metallic notes, probably from hops. Surprisingly drinkable and well balanced but less complex than i expected.

35,5cl bottle at home. Appearance: dark amber with low, off-white head. Aroma: caramel, raisins, banana. Taste: high sweetness and medium bitterness. Notes of caramel, raisins and some spice. Palate: medium bodied, sticky texture and medium carbonation. A bit to sugarry. Not much else to distinguish.

12 oz bottle shared by ebone1988 for the motherfucking book. Sigh. The pour is a darker ruby colored light brown with a thinner colored light tan head and a couple spots of lace. The aroma is really sweet. There is a lot of caramel and a light fruitiness about it. This isnt really like any other Barleywine that Ive had. There is almost a sweet potato thing happening and a strong brown sugar. The flavor is very similar. Its not the best thing by any means. Lots of sweet molassess and sweet sugar without a lot or malt shining through. This is really interesting, but not that good. The mouth feel is thin and watery with a lack of carbonation and a lingeringly sweet and sugary finish. This isnt that great at all. Damn book.

Bottle shared with koleminer20, for the book. Aroma is caramel, toffee, sweet, some pine, booze, eh. Appearance is reddish brown, clear, light brown head. Taste is caramel, toffee, some pine, sweet, brown sugar maybe, different. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, caramel aftertaste. Overall, different. Drinkable but not great.

Lovely Barley variant! Very sweet and syroppy, but also a IPA-flavour to it.
