COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Bottle. Dark red tint that glowed in the light, quite nice looking if I should say so myself. Huge thick mouthfeel, lowish carbonation. Absolutely great malty taste with spices (white pepper?), burnt sugar. A hint of the alcohol level in the finish. I would definately do this one again (and again).

CraftyHare (69) - Adelaide, AUSTRALIA - JUN 5, 2017
355ml bottle from Naples supermarket pours deep amber with tiny tan head. Aromas of toffee, hops, grass and sugar cane. Flavours of caramel malt, molasas, raisins, sugar syrup and herbal characters. Great texture and depth hide the alcohol well. A really balanced barley wine with plenty of character.

bottle, 8.2%, red-ish dark amber, clear, small, off white head. fruity, malty, honey, raisin. nice bitterness to balance the sweetness, medium body, a bit to thin for the sweetness.

PowY (714) - AUSTRIA - MAY 28, 2017
355 ml bottle, 8.2% ABV. Pours a clear dark amber with an off-white head. The aroma is malty, honey, caramel, toffee, dark fruits an an underlying hoppiness (herbal, pine) with some noticeable alcohol. Full body with a very low carbonation, a medium sweetness and a light bitterness. The flavor pretty much follows the aroma is dominated by the sweet maltiness - caramel, honey, molasses, brown sugar, spices - while the citric and herbal hops are nicely balancing the brew.

Butelka, 03.2018.

Pours red/brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is caramel, apple schnapps, peppermint. Taste is malty sweet, lots of caramel, with a fruity twang. Turns warm and bittersweet at the finish. Overall a complex mix of flavors. Full-bodied, rich, creamy palate with a mild carbonation. Very good, although I can’t quite make up my mind how high to place it. Will age a bottle for a year or two and have another go.

Kept this bottle in my basement for a pretty good while; picked it up sometime in Feb 2015! After more than two years in the chilly, dark cellar this is just about one of the best libations to ever play upon my tongue. A little smoky and a little oaky, with amazing malt/hop combo, it doesnt get much better than this. Stellar effort, keep em coming, Anchor!

My 2000th rating. 12 ounce bottle. Tawny reddish copper color topped by a small creamy beige head. Rich toasted malt nose hints a dark dried fruit, vanilla and herbal hops. First sip offers sweet malt flavor with notes of raisins, caramel, figs, vanilla and brown sugar. rich and complex. As it warms, it becomes soft and bittersweet with a touch of maple syrup. Warming alcohol notes in finish. for todays standards, this may seem tame as Barley wines go. However, it is a very good example of the style.
