COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

Either the first or second barleywine for me. Have long appreciated it for being excellently crafted even though it's not my favorite. Find the malt to be not exceedingly sweet, but close. I go back to this one over and over hoping to like it more. Perhaps sacrilege to those that love it, but as an adornment in such as "foggy night in the Sierras" I find great comfort.

Pours a clear amber with thin head and average carbonation. Big malty aromas; caramel, molasses, dried fruits, raisins and strong alcohols. Taste is rich, fruity, chewy, a great sipping beer with just enough hop presence to prevent the malt sweetness and richness from becoming too much. Great barley wine.

[email protected], from Beer Republic. Strong, earthy nuances of toffee, bit sour dark fruits and barley. Balanced. Medium taste spectrum and long aftertaste with malty dark fruits. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, organic even a bit funky but still slightly simple.

Pours a murky, oxidized rust color into a British dimpled mug with a prodigious lather. Aroma is ripe and and malty. Elements walnuts and burnt sugar. Finish is quite bitter, licorice and barley detected. Definitely benefited by cellaring, creating a smoother and longer palate overall. This is a burly, working class pub style ale. Solid proper...cheers Anchor Steam!

Amber - red colour, medium off white head with medium retention. Nice lace. Aroma of raisins, red fruits, chocolate notes, dough, Medium to full body, creamy nutty rexture. Medium carbonation..Dry finish, hops are noticed. Taste of red fruits, chocolate, licorice, caramel, nuts, wine. Good barley, though I'd like them stronger.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2017 Suszone owoce, miód, cytrusy, karmel, alkohol. Treściwość średnia z lekkim plusem, trochę likierowej słodyczy. Średnia, krótka goryczka. Średnie do wysokiego wysycenie - niepotrzebne to, trochę drażni.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2017 Pours red in the glass, with a smell that's always reminded me specifically of raisins. The taste is sweet and complex, with rich caramel and all kinds of fruity goodness like apples and raisins coming to the fore. I suppose there is an ambiguous, vinous, shaded quality to the oxidation or "oldness" of the flavors swishing around. The finish is mildly bitter and concise. Funny how many of the barleywines I have tried have borne little resemblance to it, with their sticky, aggressively-hopped backbone sometimes feeling like a little too much. Delicious stuff.

A nice dark amber/dark red, still slightly transparent. Thin layer of white head that still leaves nice lacing. Quite strong and interesting aroma shows caramel malts, sugar, estery fruitiness and slight alcohol warmth with a resinous/grassy background. Taste follows the aroma closely with sweet malts (caramel, slight honey), some residual sugary sweetness, estery fruityness. Overall surely sweet but nicely balanced by alcohol warmth and by resinous/herbal bitterness in the finish. Medium to dense in body with average carbonation, overall quite soft in the mouth. Complex enough, nicely balanced and easily drinkable with a not too high abv for the style. Good stuff.
