A thin dark ruby colored beer. Spicy aroma and malt, a bit of a pumpkin flavor, followed by a coffee/ porter-like aftertaste.

Strong flavor. Complex flavors. Can be overpowering if you have more than 1 or 2

Used to be the high point of Christmas was opening presents, now it's opening a bottle of this. Could not be better. Every year is treat. Should have brought those bottles I saw at the liquor store in June.

Big disappointment. I was looking for a big beer here. Found a big mess. Lots of malt no structure. A beer to try and impress IMHO

What an unusual beer. Most either love it or loathe it. So I had to try one. I have to say, it was an acquired taste. But I acquired it. Hard to describe, but it had a tricky balance to it, the beer fools you. Mine was this past year's. On the beginning note, you think the beer is going to wallop you with a sharp hop kick, but it gives it to you gently and gracefully on that second note. Remarkably smooth finish, considering where you have been. Has dark, spicy overtones. A good, if not unusual, brew.

2000 edition. Lots of stuff going on here: lemon, ginger, nutmeg, chocolate, and more I couldn't peg. But lots of flavor doesn't always mean a great beer; it all seemed too rich, oily, and gooey.

Astrologer99 (22) - Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, USA - MAY 3, 2001
1999 bottling. This ale should be stored at least a year before drinking. It's rough, gangling and awkward when first released. Aged, it's winter heaven in a glass. Deep, spiced, harmonious, complex.
