COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

2013 vintage. 12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. Appearance is ruby-tinted dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, pine, and some light holiday spices. The aroma gets richer and maltier as the beer warms. Taste pretty well follows the nose, with a fruity taste at the front and the holiday spices at the ends. Very nice, with lots of different tastes and smells. I like it.

Our Special Ale pours a very dark brown color with a frothy beige head of short to medium life span. If the head had dissipated a little more slowly, this brew would have been very beautiful. The bouquet is somewhat savory and has notes of prunes, pine, and Worcester sauce while the malt has the aroma of fruit bread, which carries over to the sweet attack. The well balanced mid-palate is less savory than the nose suggests and the layered mix of dried dark fruits, roast, and pine resin notes is very pleasant. It leaves a long finish with notes of German dark bread crust on the palate. Damn, this is good beer.

2015 vintage. Pours mahogany from the bottle. The crown is thick and frothy. Aroma is toffee, red berry, port wine. Taste is a bit tart, mildly bitter, spicy, oddly void of sweetness given the aroma, weird. Body approaches being medium, but also oddly thin at times. Interesting, but it failed to grow on me.

Erzengel (9080) - Wuppertal, GERMANY - JUL 23, 2017
2009 vintage. Intense plums and dry cake. Bready grainy body with dry dried fruits - cherries and plums, Round with no bitterness and a moderate sweetish malty aroma in the and. Very round, but probably too long matured.

2016 bottle, 12C. Very dark brown with a light tan head that fades to a coat. Aroma of strong bread, brown sugar, dried banana, spices - mace, nutmeg etc. Spices are by no means domineering. A bit lighter bodied than expected. Only a little sweet with bread, dried fruit and spices before a modestly bitter finish. Very nice with subtle depth, but hoped for a little bit more grunt for 6.5%

Popped the cap and unleashed a real spice bomb of an ale. It borders on a dense perfume aroma with no traditional ale scents present. A course, thick body with a thin finish. This was a bottle from the 2016 vintage, 6.5% ABV. Maybe 2016 was a bad recipe but I don’t anticipate buying this again.

Malt blend gives off that dry fruit and molasses. Comes through with the festive spirit. Gets better when warms up a bit. Reviewed - A Brew With You, Ep. 64
