COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

Suttree (6537) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - NOV 27, 2005
Mahogany, thick tan head. Aroma of licorace and peppermint, plus some molasses. Flavor is the same notes of licorace and peppermint, molasses, vanilla, and more licorace.

well i had higher hopes for this one. Chritmas brews don’t really some to be doing it for me. Seemed pretty average to me nothing really stands out about it. Had a nice spice to it.

sliffy (2040) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - DEC 5, 2005
Dark Brown pour, the head seemed almost orangish when first poured, now a medium tan. Some nutmeg, as well as others. Taste is quite unique some smoky flavor as well as the nutmeg and combination of other spices. It’s solid, but I think last years was better.

Juelze (1146) - Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 6, 2005
Pours a dadrk brown with tan color head. Smells is nutmeg, allspice, toffee, and a tiny touch of cocoa. Taste is anise, nutmeg, citrus, a bit of roast. Lightly carbonated. A pretty good beer for the style. The spices are used quite well unlike Lakefront’s Holiday brew which is spice overload.

CaptainCougar (7634) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - DEC 10, 2005
Pours a barely transparent dark brown with a thin, lightly-lacing tan head. Toasty spiced sugar cookie and ginger snap aroma has some citrusy hops. First taste is of Vienna malt and earthy spices with a thinner, hoppier finish. Not as good as the 2004 I just tried, but maybe give it a year. Thanks Jason for the bottle!

Dark cola like body… lots of anis in the aroma and flavor; Kind of reminded me of Jägermeister mixed with Coca Cola. A bit nutty but with and some watery coffee bitterness in the finish… More herbal notes of juniper berry, ginger root, rosemary, lots of evergreen pine likeness. This years vintage was a strange release overall. - The palate is rather watery for this beer, judged by past vintages, but like I mentioned, somewhat like a watered down and spritzy Jäger.

On tap. Poured a darker reddish-brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, light spices and pine. Tastes pretty much the same with roasted malts.

12oz bottle: Pours a very dark black-brown color, large head, tan in color, good lacing around the edges. Roasted aroma with malts, chocolate, flowers, slight hops. Flavor of malts, sweet, light alcohol, spices, slight bitterness, good carbonation, slightly tannic. Cellaring might do this one good.

Nice year. Some piney spiced notes to mix with the regular suspects. Well hopped. A pleasure to drink.

Hmmm. I like this, but please help remind me why the years are separated. I know it gets a slightly new recipe each year, but as I’ve been drinking them for over 20 years I really can only remember a year or two that stood out from the rest and it might have had to do more with my pallet than the beer. Nice over all and will probably enjoy them for many more years despite tending not to like spiced ales.
