COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

2012 - Single bottle from Total Wine. Very dark amber pour with a small tan head. Heavy lacing. A lot of vanilla and ginger in the aroma, along with some pine, citrus, and dough. Pretty heavy malt taste to start, then grass/pine, bread, bitter chocolate. Finishes with some cinnamon/ginger spice. Medium-bodied, low carbonation. Not bad, but wouldn’t keep me from reaching for a lot of other winter releases first.

Bit strange. Pours a nice clear dark brown with a big frothy head that lingers. Lots of spice in the nose .... Nutmeg maybe? Taste follows suit with a good dose of Xmas spice upfront. Bit of sweet malt underneath. Reminded me a bit of gingerbread. Little bit of piney hops to finish it off. Remarkably light in body, surprisingly so. Overall a bit of an enigma for me .... Not sure if I love it or hate it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Malty, fruity and spicy aroma. Prunes, raisins, nutmeg, licorice, allspice, some cinnamon, caramel and walnut. Slightly gingerbready, also somewhat reminiscent to a dark bock in part. Taste is light tart and chocolatey, continuing to a light bitter, gingerbready, nutty finish with notes of licorice, coffee and roasted malt. Body is light to medium but still a brew suitable for Christmas. Very good.

Piney taste almost like drinking a Christmas tree. Cinnamon, clove and nutmeg flavors. It's ok but it's so intense that I can't have more than one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
