COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ales recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editors Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

2006 bottle. Cinnamon and cloves on the nose. Pours quite dark with a vey quickly dissipating ruby head. Flavour very nice with some astringency (not unpleasantly) and more cloves balanced with some sweet malt. Mouthfeel lets it down a bit as it is a little thin and watery, but all in all a pleasant sesaonal.

Deep mahogany-brown with a good-sized, fairly sticky tan head. Aromas are roasted but at the same time high-toned, with anise, vanilla, and even a hint of soap. Moderately heavy carbonation and a medium body, with a suggestion of acidity from front to back. Flavor profile is less roasted than the nose, with more fruitiness, spice and some yeastiness too. Ends tangy and ever so slightly astringent. Doesnt suit my tastes nearly as perfectly as Anchor Steam or Liberty, but still a very characterful brew.

Draft: Pours a dark amber color with a small to not much head. This beer smelled of pine and cloves. The taste was that of the season, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. This was a great desert beer.

2007 version, Valley oak tree on label: Opaque body, with a tan head that disappeared way too quickly. Splotchy lacing. Holiday cookie-like aroma, which was quite a bit sweeter than the flavor. At first, the flavor profile consisted of cardamom, nutmeg, giner, allspice, and toffee, but the finish could best be described as acrid coffee and smoke. The carbonation was lively, but overall mouthfeel was slightly on the watery side. I feel that Anchor did a pretty good job with this one, but years past had finer offerings.

2006 Pours deep garnet/ruby brown with a fleeting tan head. Light caramel and spice aroma. Starts sweet with a sour bitterness in the finish that must come from the spices. I dont know if this one works for me.

Nice rich porter like color with notes of chocolate and spice. Great dark tan head with excellent lacing. Nice allspice finish that lingers just a bit before Im ready for another sip. A very enjoyable winter beer that I will continue to enjoy after a day on the slopes.
