This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

This beer is great! Pours nice and thick with a great head. First whiff is of bitter chocolate, nutmeg and caramel. Taste is about the same. Chocolate stands out along with some anise maybe, with notes of plum and fig. Definitely a winner! Every year I like this beer more.

Sunday, January 14, 2018. 2017 Bottle, 355mL. 6.7%. Purchase ("La Cervoiserie", @Poitiers, FR). Home. A black opaque beer with a big beige foamy head ; average retention ; ok lacing. Roasted, cinnamon(+), caramel notes, prune notes, some licorice. Light sweet, light dry refreshing spicy, bitter note. Medium body, thin texture, soft gaseous, dry refreshing spicy finish. Overall, correct ; slightly disappointing.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aromas of dark dried fruits (plum, black currents); winter/pumpkin pie spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, allspice) aromas are clear but not overwhelming. Color is black; even the edges are very dark brown. Medium sized tan head. Taste is fairly dry and fairly bitter. Medium bodied; carbonation is somewhat lively. Finish is fairly long, with dried fruit, winter spices, carbonation and a dry finish. Overall this is a pretty good beer. It has some complexity with spice, roasted flavors, dried fruits; the overall dryness and lively carbonation work well with beer.

Aroma: spicy and herbal, nutmeg. Appearance: Brown color and creamy head. Taste: spicy, nutmeg, roasted dark malts, spruce, cola, herbal, rather dry. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation. Overall: no idea what should I expect. A decent beer.

2017 edition. Darker than expected. A little thin but tasty. A bit spicy, quite bitter. Decent depth. A good but not stunning effort.

Aroma of cola, roasty malt, licorice, holiday spices. A brown color, fairly clear but dark, and with a frothy, brown head. The flavor was medium sweet. Medium body, smooth, creamy texture

2015 Edition. 355mL bottle BBE: 08.2017. Served in a tulip glass @ 16ºC. Pours a deep, dark, almost black body with a medium, tight, creamy, tan head giving complete coverage with moderate lacing. Medium intensity aroma, dominated by a rich, sweet, caramelised, treacle toffee smell, and livened by plum, pine needles and bran flakes. Hints of liquorice. To taste, a suggestion of fruity acidity is replaced by a lasting, medium burnt toffee sweetness, savoury notes and dry oak. Medium bodied with a creamy finish, medium-high carbonation and a soft liquorice candy finish. An interesting beer in great condition, just dominated a little too much by a treacle toffee flavour. Otherwise flawless. Cheers and a Happy New Year to Craig for the bottle.

2017. 6.7%. Black. Mineral sweetness.mild chocolate.Taste is roast char. Acidic bitter. Bordering astringent. Acidic stout like. Minerally bitter. Like a dubble , stout but more stout or heavy Porter. Doubt I would care for a sixer of this.

Nocturne (2238) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - DEC 31, 2017
2016 bottle. Dark appearance with light brown foam. Taste is burnt, twiggy, spicy, liquorice. Decent but I expected a bit more.

jjsint (3599) - Leicester, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - DEC 31, 2017
Bottle of 2017 vintage, bought at Best One, Bedford, drunk at home. Rich dark brown with purplish hue. Opaque with a wisp of khaki head. Spruce, allspice, oak, a touch of molasses. Bittersweet taste with earthy hops asserting at the end. Woody and slightly astringent finish with liquorice and medicinal herbs in the aftertaste. Highly carbonated. A brilliant beer.
