This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

Czarne z czapą beżowej piany. Dość duże wysycenie, piwko syczało sążnie przy nalewaniu. W aromacie mix biszkoptu, anyżu i mieszanki przypraw.

This is sort of like a dark lager, but has some characteristics of a porter and dunkel. Appears a dark dark brown, but isn't very heavy. I am tasting chocolate, caramel, and coffee malts....maybe a little toffee too? All those nice holiday spices with what appears to be spruce, but only mild. A light hop finish to balance it all out. An all-around solid brew.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2018 Mörkt brun, nästan svart. Plommon i doften. Choklad, rostad säd i smaken.

From 16 ounce Prowler bought at Liquor Shed bought at Liquor Shed in Casper. 2017. Pours near black, tiniest bit of red hues. Great head of foam with good lacing. Smells of nutmeg, almost like what you get with a pumpkin beer, bananas, cloves, roasted malt. Taste has the nutmeg, cloves, bananas, kinda roasty, very low level of bitterness. Very tasty. Great mouthfeel, easy drinking, excellent from this mini Growler. Bottles won't be coming so I am glad Jacob got some and put it on the Growler station.

Bottle. Pours very dark ruby with a minimal head. Aroma of Christmas spices, gingerbread. Taste is dry with a noticeable bitterness. Flavors slight red fruit, orange peel, slight dark malt? Medium body, slick texture, high carbonation. Nah, it just didn't do it for me, though I'm not a fan of the style, I guess.

Talking of the 2017 version, it tastes very similar to Anchor Porter, to me, except a little stronger. The extra strength gives it a bit more alcohol on the nose. It has wheat in it but I can't detect that difference from the porter. It's an intense drink, this, with strong hoppiness added to the alcohol, yeast, and coffee flavours. There's a touch of sweetness in it, but not enough to stop it being a harsh one, in my opinion. Good but challenging.
