Anchor Steam Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called krusening.

Anchor Steam Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when steam was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Franciscos rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name steam is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Franciscos original Anchor Steam Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

Pours copper in color, light head. Nose of malty caramel. Thick caramel is dominant followed by barley with a hint of bitterness and a walnut finish.

Aroma of caramel, malts. Pours a dark gold with a small white head. Tastes of caramel and toast with a smooth finish. Very drinkable.

The standard of the style. Regular on draught at the belle. Amber-copper colour in a pint glass. Clear. Classic Anchor yeast nose, not enough hop aroma to back it up. Taste is good but one dimensional, could do with more body and more complex malts for an amber lager. There are now better examples.

Botella. Color mbar limpio. Buena capa de espuma que mantiene 1 cm. Aroma a caramelo tostado. En boca se confirma de forma predominante el sabor a caramelo, pero no resulta nada dulce. Un punto agradable de amargor te pide echar otro trago.

Caramel, dough, sweetness on the nose. Round and somewhat flabby and with a light foamy head that dissipates quickly. Carbonation does seem OK. Had a sweet attack and smooth mouth feel on the back end. Not as profound as expected given the lofty reviews over the years. I wonder if I had a bad sixer or poorly stored sample as the head is very thin and insipid and disappears after only half a minute.

Live rating of a chilled 330ml bottle served in a 1/2 pint chalice. Dark amber with a white skim. Funky, earthy almost Belgian aroma. Quite full bodied for a lager. Berry fruit, candy, vanilla and bitterness in the flavour. Oily mouthfeel. quite gassy. Like a lager/bitter hybrid.
