Anchor Steam Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called krusening.

Anchor Steam Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when steam was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Franciscos rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name steam is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Franciscos original Anchor Steam Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

En ganska speciell l. En trevlig fyllighet, men ingen vidare beska. En srskild ton i smaken, frn den unika tillverkningen?

Fruity aroma, with some breadiness. Deep amber colour with hardly any head. Highly carbonated. The taste comes on very hoppy, although not a pine/citrus IPA-style explosion. More subtle than that. Malt breadiness also comes through, especially at the very end. Not one of my go-to beers, but I enjoy it.

Pours amber from the bottle and leaves a frothy, finger-thick crown. Aroma is honey, fresh bandage, with a lightly floral note.Taste is lightly bittersweet with a subtle berry undertone. Noticeable caramel as well. Wonderful is the palate - robust, smooth, creamy with a nicely balanced carbonation. It really makes the beer. All in all simple yet scrumptious. Drank this once years ago but didnt remember much. Wish Id gotten back to it sooner. A real pleasure to drink.

2016 catch up - Bottle at home - It was beer. Not much else to say. A bit like a best bitter and I can get those at a much better price than this.

Beer served in 10C, Nonic Glass. Pours ruby, reddish dark amber, clear, with two finger and thick head. Aroma of sweet, wet malts. Malty creamy taste with hints of bread, earth, dirt, stable, smoke and not so bitter hops. Easy drinkable and unique.

From bottle in shaker. Pours deep amber with one finger frothy head. Aroma is lager-esque with notes of fruit bread. Taste starts with smooth daramel malt and finishes with a bit of orange peel bitterness. This was a gateway beer for me into the craft beer world a quarter of a century ago (along with SNPA). Nice to revisit.

Bottle. Clear amber gold colour. Medium creamy off-white head. Fairly lively carbonation. Very Malty; toasty malts, bready, caramel. Citrus fruity, orange. Mildly spicy. Moderately hoppy, floral hops. Nice malt/fruit/hop balance. Sweet malty fruity throughout. Dry finish. Pleasant easy drinking beer. (2017-04)

12 ounce bottle. Cant believe I never rated this before. Nice Amber orange pour. Firm, rocky beige head leaves nice clinging lace. Sweet fruity malt nose has hints of brown sugar and baked bread. Mild earthy toasted malt flavor has sweet and spicy notes. Some hop bitterness in finish offers a nice balance. Crisp dry bitter aftertaste. Still tasty after all these years.
