Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

This is a nice mild beer that feels great after you have had one of your teeth pulled. It looked like beer smelled like beer and tasted like a beer. Never been to San Fran but when I get there I’ll be sure to visit the Anchor Steam. I cant chew Big Red today but A nice certs breath mint is in order before I take my daily haul to the bank. God BlessBeer.

Very clean, crisp flavor. Subtle bitterness on the back of the tongue that rounds out the flavor ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a dark golden colour with good sized white head and high carbonation. Aromas are bready malt, light fruitiness, slight grassiness and some hop presence. Taste is medium bodied, a good level of malt flavours but with quite a pronounced bitterness. Enjoyable beer, went really well with my spicy beef pizza - robust enough flavours to stand up to the food and the hop bitterness helped cut through the spice.....definitely a beer that I would prefer with food rather than on its own.

355ml bottle at home on 26th December 2017; received as a Christmas gift. Pours deep amber with a lasting whitish foam. Tangy citrus and sweet berry fruits in aroma. Citrus and sweet malts in-mouth, with intense grassiness. A slight metallic note in an otherwise grassy, hoppy finish.

First time drinking a classic. Pours a medium amber with moderate off white head. Well balanced, a bit of malt, fruit, spice, but all is very subtle. Not sweet, which is very good. A bit dry at the finish. Overall a very good, flavorful, easy drinking beer. Glad I finally bought some, and was bottle October 7th, so fairly fresh as these beers go. Prost!
