Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

UPDATED: JUL 15, 2016 BB Feb 2018, pretty fresh. Flowery hops lavendar on the nose. Fruity and crisp with a nice biscuit twist at the end. Subsequent sips are more and more bitter. Starts like a sweeter Dortmunder but ends like a dry and floral pils. Cool beer actually surprised at how good it is. A fantastic session beer.

35,5cl bottle from MS Viking XPRS. Pours clear golden with a white head. Mild hoppy and malty aroma with lightly fruity and grassy notes. Moderate sweet with mild, but rather nice and balanced hoppy and malty flavours and a certain bitterness in the finish. Plain, but balanced and rather tasty. Sessionable.

Can. I have a cold, so the nose is distorted: malty, hint of bourbony grain (odd might be me), grass, cereal. Taste is malty, grain, hint of bourbon, very light chocolate, bits of banana, cereal, grass. Pleasing dry finish Very nice for a larger and with (relative) subtlety and depth.

Medium light malty smell, taste is malt on front end hops on back, bitterness is just a hint on the finish...malt is straightforward and dry...one dimentional and grainy...the lightest amount of sweetness if any...medium strength but boring...

Another tepid entry from Anchor. Don't get me wrong-it's not bad. It's just kinda bland. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From can, pours a light amber with miimal head. Aroma of grains, slight bready malt and a touch of hop. Not too sweet with good dry bitterness. Overal a pretty good pale lager!

Aroma of apples. Quite fruity and estery for a lager. Smooth creamed corn in the finish. Floral hop bitterness rounds it out. Not sweet but not overly dry. Very drinkable and flavorful for a pale lager. I’d tend to prefer something like this to have more noticeable notes of grains involved, but this is pretty good for a crisp light drinker if you’re not in the mood for a hop bomb. It does a lot of the same things that Anchor Steam Beer does well, but I guess I’d take one of those if given the choice.
