Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

Golden color. In the aroma, definitely has that bread, cracker flavor that we expect from Steam. Also some apricots. Light-medium bodied. Very clean and subtle. More malty than other lagers, but still light. Nice creamy mouthfeel when you swirl it around. It’s not spectacular and I think that Liberty Ale is more interesting, but I’d probably prefer this to Steam (pretty much just a lighter version of it).

Clear golden pour, big white head. Aroma is very grassy, pale, biscuity malts. Good mouth feel, soft carb. Grassy finish, well made, nothing special, but good for what it is.

Clear liquid gold with a white lightly head of fluff. A very crisp and perfectly balanced craft lager. Light grain bill with a soft light dry hop taste. Good stuff from Anchor.

kraddel (7770) - Antwerp, BELGIUM - JUN 10, 2017
Sampled at a blind tasting with Dr Beer. Served in Black glassware. Smell is rather intense, fresh mashed grains. Much breaddoughy character ( white bread ) even some coockies. Bit creamy. No real noticable other features. Taste is rather creamy, with a sharp , bitter bite to it. Some more intensely flavored hops than the traditionnal standards, a very moderate piny feature. White bread, not as sweet as I expected from the scent. Rather high carbo, but not over the top.

Bottle: Found in a supermarket in Costa Rica. Great for a Pale Lager, but why would you brew a Pale Lager?

SanfordBrewer (1572) - Sanford, Florida, USA - MAY 21, 2017
Brilliant gold with persistent white head and high effervescence. Medium body with a little slickness and high carbonation.

Aroma: doughy pale malt, assertive and slightly wild yeast character, faint vegetal hops.

Taste: mildly tart, rough and lingering herbal bitterness, slight metallic.

What i would expect from a clone of a beer brewed in a time of very limited ingredient options and no refrigeration. Rough around the edges, but not bad.

Bottled 355ml. -from Pivoteka Zagreb. Clear golden coloured, small white head, rather neutral nose. Sweet malty, light grainy, herbalish hoppy and caramel with some bitterness in the finish. Boring one.
