COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

Really tremendous lager. Brilliant yellow with a thick frothy head. Crisp lager flavors coupled with a thicker than expected mouthfeel. This is going to get some play this summer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 fl. oz. can. Beer fobbed beer on opening, (stored at 13 deg. C). Clear gold with subsiding white head. Aroma of cereal and aromatic hop. Mouthfeel quite prolonged. Reasonably bitter. A smooth finish. Overall: a strongly flavoured lager.

355 ml can @home,bb 20/04/2019. Deep gold, clear. Aroma? I don’t smoke, nor have blocked nose yet can’t smell anything bar faint echo of some malt. At least it doesn’t stink. Taste is malt, minimal bitterness. Just average lager, meh.

Bottle - pours a lightly hazed honey gold lager with a puffy white cap. Aroma is pungent with bready malts and a herb-floral undertone, a wee pit of sweetness mingles with some woodiness. Flavor is big on lush rounded malts, decent balance from some bright hopping , never sweet but malt-pronounced.... moderate finish still well balanced and rounded goes a little bitter with a nice fresh bread after taste. A great American lager like they were before prohibition malty hoppy, sturdy and satisfying. I bet this is awesome when fresh on tap. I’d drink this all summer if it were available here

Clear golden pour, big white head. Aroma is very grassy, pale, biscuity malts. Good mouth feel, soft carb. Grassy finish, well made, nothing special, but good for what it is.

Clear liquid gold with a white lightly head of fluff. A very crisp and perfectly balanced craft lager. Light grain bill with a soft light dry hop taste. Good stuff from Anchor.
