Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

Bottle from Raley’s in Vacaville, CA. This is top notch for a lager. Most are jjust a corny, grainey mess. This had a decent hop presence and had a sweet and fruity flavor. Not my style so had to knock it down a bit on the overall

AgentAle (1806) - Alberta, CANADA - OCT 7, 2017
Light crisp lager with more depth than most lagers. Fresh and very drinkable.

Ascelja (1678) - Neratovice, CZECH REPUBLIC - OCT 2, 2017
Bottle. Almost clear, gold, medium white head. Aroma of yeast, malts, hops. Taste is semi-sweet, lightly bitter. Hops, yeasts, nice malty base, unfortunately with papery tones and fermented apricots. Medium body and carbonation.
Well, not best lager, but better than many commercial examples...

355ml bottle. Pours clear golden, medium white head. Nose is papery, somewhat sweet, mild fruit and hop notes. Tastes rough, the hops in the finish are even rougher than the starting malts. And the aftertaste, oh the aftertaste, where hops dance across your palate like little cones of barbed wire. Hard to get this one down.

Rotin (1679) - Neratovice, CZECH REPUBLIC - SEP 26, 2017
Bottle 0.355l. Lightly cloudy, gold colored. AROMA- malty sweet, slight hoppy tones. FLAVOR- smooth, neutral, lightly bitter, hops, malt. Light to medium bodied.
Average lager.

Beer snobs need to do blind tests, and then rate for style. This is a great beer on draft and a very good beer out of the bottle.

tanel025 (199) - ESTONIA - SEP 22, 2017
Clear golden beer with lots of creamy white head, stays for couple of minutes. Aroma is mostly hops. Taste is caramel, malt, hops. Medium body. Medium sweetness, low bitterness. Simple beer, very drinkable and very good.

nihtila (3836) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - SEP 20, 2017
Keg at the brewery. Crisp, pale malty. Tastes light sweet, pale malts, light straw.

Slipstream (2677) - USA - SEP 15, 2017
UPDATED: SEP 15, 2017 Draft at Broadway Dive. Nice lace on a standard pour. Supposedly brewed according to their first lager recipe. Taste of fresh whole grain bread and light hops. Dank, sweet, honey aroma. Definitely good for the style.

12 oz bottle poured into chilled glass. Part of a California variety 12-pack containing three bottles each of Steam beer, IPA, Liberty Ale, and CA Lager (Safeway $13.99). My first experience with this solid offering by the local legends of craft beer. Anchor beers and ales don't disappoint after 150 years of brewing tradition in San Francisco. My favorites are Anchor Steam beer and Liberty, a West Coast pale ale. This lager is a pleasant surprise - nice balance between malts and hops with more bite than you'd expect from an American lager.

josanguapo (1859) - SPAIN - SEP 7, 2017
From Elcervevero. In Teku glass. After dinner. Null aroma and not much taste, just some grassy notes that becomes worst as it warms up. Bigger body than usual. No defects but boring.
