COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

Keg at the brewery. Crisp, pale malty. Tastes light sweet, pale malts, light straw.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2017 Draft at Broadway Dive. Nice lace on a standard pour. Supposedly brewed according to their first lager recipe. Taste of fresh whole grain bread and light hops. Dank, sweet, honey aroma. Definitely good for the style.

12 oz bottle poured into chilled glass. Part of a California variety 12-pack containing three bottles each of Steam beer, IPA, Liberty Ale, and CA Lager (Safeway $13.99). My first experience with this solid offering by the local legends of craft beer. Anchor beers and ales don't disappoint after 150 years of brewing tradition in San Francisco. My favorites are Anchor Steam beer and Liberty, a West Coast pale ale. This lager is a pleasant surprise - nice balance between malts and hops with more bite than you'd expect from an American lager.

From Elcervevero. In Teku glass. After dinner. Null aroma and not much taste, just some grassy notes that becomes worst as it warms up. Bigger body than usual. No defects but boring.

Copenhagen 3/9 2017. 35,5 cl bottle from Meny. Nice little chubby bottle. Prowling Grey Bear on the label. Surrounded by Corn Ears and Hops. Good company. Pours hazy orange with small white head. Settles as thin patchy layer of foam. No lacing.Aroma is sweet pale malts with prominent notes of grass and a little bit skunky. Fairly high carbonation and watery palate. Flavor is medium sweet followed by quite strong bitterness for this kind of beer. Aftertaste is bitter and finish is semi dry. Nice with a Pale Lager which actually has the bitterness to balance the mandatory sweetness - and then some.

Poured with a nice 1.5" head but it dissipated to less than 0.5" before I took my first taste. Basic lager with a displeasing crisp, super dry finish. No body or mouth feel at all. I will stick with Yuengling when I am looking for a Lager.

Draft at Chancellors Hotel in San Francisco. Clean, really well-balanced lager with some citrus character and a satisfying hop finish. Nice lager.

best anchor I’ve had, not too hoppy, quite a lot going on; and a nice bitter finish, bottle from m&s

355 ml bottle. Pours pale golden with decent head. Grapefruit and other citrus fruits, grass, a bit metal, spicy hops. Hoppy bitterness. Soft carbonated, light bodied. Creamy mouthfeel. Reminds me on a unfiltrated Pilsener. Quite crisp and characterful pale lager.
