COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

Nothing special. Just a lager, close to budweiser, zagorka or smth else... but in better form. A little bit hoppy, hop+

Golden beer, white head. A very light, sweet aroma but not much. Flavour is crisp and fresh. Some citrus, maybe even a touch of something like caramel or honey.... whatever it is it's faint but it really makes the whole thing really smooth and easy-going. This isn't anything spectacular but it's not bad either. Pleasant enough for what it is.

12floz bottle, BOD: 01.26.2017 ("7JT" code), $1.75 unit cost, pint glass. I somehow forgot that the "J" stood for January upon purchase ( I was thinking June). Looks like big beer commercial beer, but with a tad darker shade of gold. Smells like clay and grass. Tastes like a Euro style pale lager, and similar to zwickels I've had from American breweries. This is to say it is light-medium in body with mineral and hay notes. Reviewed as is, it probably would rate about a 3.8 if fresh.

Golden clear pour with a fast dissipating head. Sweet malty aroma, some hops, caramel and toffee notes. Pretty on the heavy side of sweet. Light bitter. Medium body with moderate carbo. Nice lager, a bit too sweet though.

This one is the proof that not everything that is old is worth recreating. Part of the LCBO 2017 Summer Beer Program. I haven't seen no 'creamy head', mild to no effervescence, aroma is less than pleasing, taste is minimally of interest. Rating for this beer show that this style is difficult, where the beer rates high in its category but below average in the overall. Not my type. Pass. Friend of mine died today, maybe I'm not in the mood.

Lovely dry hops with malts make a lovely amber lager it has all the hailmarks of a proper kräusened beer and its pretty decent.
