Taster at Saravezaís Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival. Brett aroma. Dark chocolate, yeast, and a little tart Berry flavor. Finishes with a chocolate aftertaste.
Itís never surprising to get funky Brett in a bottle of Anchorage beer, but the Alaskan brewers sometimes knock me off balance with just how much complexity they can bring out. Anadromous did that for me. It has a dark brown appearance and a light brown head that fades quickly. Earthy old oak aromatics and some vinous notes. Taste profile is complex to a degree thatís hard to pin down. It varied with almost each sip. At various tastes and temperatures I got musty wood, barnyard Brett, vinous dark grape, citrus, sour black cherry, blackberry, and aged vinegar. Acidic mouthfeel yet itís not overwhelming. Anchorage has always had something of a mad scientist slant with how they treat Brett and barrels, but Anadromous seems especially bizarre. I mean that in the kindest way. Bottle. Jet black pour with a light tan head. Light cocoa sweetness, some roast, light red wine vinegar in the aroma. Sour dark cherries, cocoa powder, slight roast, some woodiness. Aroma is moderately malt forward with quite a bit of dark fruit and red wine notes. Moderate chocolate notes with some lighter coffee and toasted bread notes. Moderately strong red wine notes with some light berry, cherry, plum and prune. Light oak notes with hints of bourbon.
Pours black with a medium sized, moderately thick, mocha colored head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers for a bit. No lacing and medium small legs.
Flavor is moderately acidic and slightly sharp. Moderate chocolate notes with almost and equal amount of coffee and roast. Some lighter toasted bread. Moderate dark fruit notes with raisin, berry, cherry, prune and plum. Some medium light red wine notes with light bourbon and oak. Low bitterness and some medium low astringency.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Moderate astringency and low, but present alcohol warmth.
Overall, a decent beer, but I think yesterdayís dark sour from Shady Oak was better. This one is a bit too acidic and the fruit notes clash more with the malt than I prefer.

Itís nearly black with a half inch of gradually settling tan foam. At room temp the pinot and whisky aromas really come out, grape jelly, alcohol, smoked wood. The flavor has some dark fruit, black grape, cherry, with a bit of dark chocolate bitterness on the back end, some musty dirt, slightly tart and sweet. The carbonation is fairly soft, a bit acidic on the tongue. Itís definitely unique and not bad. Unlike anything Iíve ever tasted.

750ml corked bottle, thanks Craig! Rich red wine aroma with notes of sour cherry, chocolate, Brett funk, whiskey and some oak. Pours black with a thin light brown head that has poor retention and little lacing. Starts with tart cherry flavors with notes of chocolate and whiskey as well as a rich, full body and vinous mouthfeel. Finishes tart and dry, like a dry red wine, with red wine, Brett funk and a bit of oak with the red wine flavors lingering heavily on the palate. Very nice. UXO (1896) - CANADA - NOV 29, 2016
Appearance: deep ruby brown with a hint of lightening around the margins, one finger of creamy beige head, excellent retention and spotty lacing. So, "anadromous" means a fish that migrates upriver, and the horrible monster on the label is actually a salmon. Not entirely sure what that has to do with the beer, mind you - itís not fishy, thatís for sure. Itís red wine tart and lightly funky, with complex notes on a somewhat light body. Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a jet black color with an off white to tan foamy head. Delicate foamy lace.
The aroma started off with some sweet dark and milk chocolate, dried dark fruits, balanced vinous quality, somewhat tart/sour.
The flavor blends the vinous sour to the chocolate sweetness. Some barrel dried woodiness and the dark fruits showing their tart qualities, almost more like blackberry if anything. Leans to the chocolate sweet side with the sour making a decent effort in the aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Sour vinous qualities seem to just balance and donít really add any harshness or distract from the feel. Actually, because of that, it just seems to balance very appropriately.

Pours black into a tulip. Tan head with excellent retention recedes leaving scant sheets. Dusty chocolate and plum aromas.
