AKA Andechser Dunkles Weissbier

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel has been the perfect completion to the Andechs monastery brewery’s range of products since 1997. This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts. Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa. Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note (original extract: 12.5%, abv: 5.0%).

Fresh bottle. Blackened ruby. Scattered white head. Raisin bread, puttylike yeast, macaroons, black licorice, vanilla beans, overripe banana and clove-spiked plums line the alluring aroma. Hints of baked apples and fusel alcohol. Fuzzy carbonation. Fairly airy, initially, with a gently coarse irony tartness met by a tranquil bready malt and dilute black coffee tailing. Subtle notes of spicy tobacco and a springier wheat like twang ensue, and although some wheat-derived starchiness does spawn a late touch of welcome chewiness, the malt lacks substantialness and certainly melanoidins. Scarcely a trace of phenols. A background cocoa-dusted vanilla cookie note pokes through and speaks to the refined and unblemished malt character, but, again, rather reservedly. Notes of raisin and chocolate cookie reinforce the thinnish body with a fruity softness. Pureed banana and an oily vanilla bean suggestion latch onto the sturdy wheat and augment the body towards the short, clove- and sassy licorice-touched finish. Distant notes of toffee, vanilla and bubblegum linger. Liveliness is what separates the world-class weissbiers from the rest, and while this is a very clean version, it just doesn’t have the phenolic character that leaps from the glass. What this lacks in complexity is made up for in finesse and balance. Just a bummer about the thin and watery mouthfeel and slight tartness. The Weissbier Hell sampled at the brewery years ago remains my favorite beer in their portfolio, but this is very respectable.

At source in Andechs. Pours chestnut brown with a good off white head. Aroma is banana, yeast, clove and a little chocolate. Taste is banana, yeasty bread, clove and a little chocolate. Really nice and easy drinking with good carbonation. Decent stuff

Bottle. Cloudy brown ale with tall dense beide head. Aroma: Spicy yeast, banana, caramel, toast. Light to medium body. Medium dry taste. Malty base makes the start with caramel and toast. Later the yeast takes the lead. Nice spice. Low bitterness on ending. Everything sounds like a routine thing. The fact is this is very good.

schokoladenbraun mit beigem Schaum. Geruch Nelke, etwas Banane, malzig. Geschmack malzig süß mit Aromen von Nelke und nur wenig Banane. Dazu leichte Röst-und Schokoladenaromen. Sehr runde Sache!

500 ml from tap at Andechser in Mering close to Augsburg. Served in Weizenbier glass. Darkbrown colour, creamy foam head. Caramel, cocoa, chocolate, a bit coffee, malt. Malty, with slight bitter hint. Soft carbonated, but a bit watery. Medium body, oily texure.

Draught at Rose and Crown in Palo Alto. This batch really lacked the malty richness I was hoping for. Also, the esters were restrained. Not too interesting.

Bottle. Dark brown. Big thick head. Aroma of bananas and malts. Taste is bananas, yeast, malts, bread, a little bit of chocolate and caramell. Rather bitter than sweet compared to other Hefeweizen. Strong carbonation. Slightly alcoholic. Full bodied and süffig. Lovely.

FROTHINGSLOSH (7796) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 15, 2017
Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with orange highlights and an enormous foamy orange-white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was bread crust, pretzel, cola and hints of cherry and fig. The flavor was bitter and somewhat astringent with notes of toffee, yeast, cola and raisin. Medium length finish. Medium body. Ok.
