Probably the finest beer brewed in America today. Other posters here have described it. You know it’s rich and malty and full-bodied. If you’re on the West Coast, give it a try. Tejas (1006) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JUN 30, 2007
Been looking forward to this one b/c the guy in MarCellars highly recommended it. Almost black color. Big tan head. Sweet chocolatey aroma. Big chocolate flavor. Very good creamy palate. Great sipping beer. Excellent beer all around. I brought back a bunch of beer from WY and ID but this is the one I most wish I could get regularily. Perfect in my mind. Only my 2nd 5 but this deserves it. BusBoy (38) - , California, USA - JAN 14, 2011
Bought a 22oz bottle to rate it. Opens to a roasted smell, slightly sweet, burnt smell of sugar. Pours a heavy black colour. Huge tan head that rises slowly and bursts with smells of burnt grains, alcohol and hints of nutmeg and rosy hops. I sipped and lapped some of the foam before it edged over my mug and it was bitter sweet with a roasted back bone. (BTW, the bottle says to serve between 52 and 58*F... mine is a nice 56...) Beer is so dense that light cannot pass thru it. Head mellows to a heavy layer of tan and brown lace. Body is rich and satisfying... bittering hops are hard to distinguish from the malt. Creamy sweetness interrupts the flavour for a smooth, toasted finish. Reminds me of my youth when the only beer I drank for a long time was Sheaf Stout. This is a perfect brew in this class. Hats off to Anderson Valley Brewing Co. illiniphil (148) - Nashotah, Illinois, USA - SEP 3, 2012
This is one killer oatmeal stout. Pours motor oil black with a two finger head that quickly dissipates. Taste is chocolate, coffee and caramel. Very rich, smooth and balanced.

Finale persistente. Ottima!

Best oatmeal stout I’ve ever had. Strong taste of chocolate and malt. Excellent. mantis7 (4) - Santa Rosa, California, USA - OCT 14, 2005 does not count
I have never tasted a better beer, let alone a better stout. Thick clean tasting with a good head. The only possible way to get a better beer (if you like stouts) than this is to go there in person to Booneville, CA and have one from a keg....Bottom Line: If you love stout beer - you will love this. I would also recomend this beer for someone who is just starting to enjoy different kinds of beers. I gave one of these to my girlfriend who is 23 and "doesn’t like beer" and she loved it!
BTW anderson valley brewery has won many awards including "top 10 brewerys in the US" and this beer (Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout) has won numerous gold / silver bronze medals world wide against WORLD CLASS stouts. It truly is one of the best stouts in the world. And its my favorite! jimmbo123 (44) - Washington, USA - JUN 14, 2009
UPDATED: JUL 27, 2009 Creamy texture, sweet but not too sweet. A lot of flavors: toasted, roasted, nutty,
molasses, caramel, chocolate,
coffee. davidm (2080) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - NOV 28, 2011
Bottle at King&Godfree. Exceptional, great balance. Aromas of milky chocolate, vanilla, and liquorice. Taste is sweet and bitter, with very long length. Palate is almost creamy, with a medium-to-full body. Black, with a frothy head.
