Foodies and connoisseurs have undoubtedly heard of the French culinary term coulis. This gastronomic term for a sauce on the basis of fresh fruit, has made us dream.
Made on the basis of a white ale and enriched with natural fruit juice, Boscoli is a fruity beer for beautiful days, beautiful terraces and beautiful eyes.

Alengrin (5006) - BELGIUM - NOV 4, 2016
Apparently Het Anker has replaced the old 6.5% version of this beer with a new 3.5% version in 2010 and I only recently noted that this is - correctly - a separate entry here, so I went out and bought a bottle of it at Van Eetvelde in Lokeren. Medium thick, pale lilac, moussy head leaving strongly cobweb-like lacing, over a lightly hazy, ruby red beer with purplish hue. Aroma of red fruit jam jumps to the nose, along with impressions of red candy (not unlike the cuberdons usually associated with the city of Ghent - rather than Mechelen), grenadine, stewed plums with a lot of sugar, damp cloth, red cabbage cooked with brown sugar, ripe blackberries, pear syrup, industrial blueberry cake, some caramel, iron, ketchup, lemon candy but less exagerrated than expected, fried eggs. Obviously very sweet onset, lots of artificial red fruit - as in: strawberry and blueberry jam, grenadine, and again those cuberdons - sticking to the palate immediately though some - equally artificial and ascorbic - underlying sourishness tries to balance this; carbonation is medium, establishing a slick, smooth mouthfeel impaired by sugary stickiness. This sugary, industrial red fruit jam effect completely covers everything that follows, though a certain caramelly malt sweet touch is still vaguely recognizable underneath, accompanied by a metallic accent which even - unpleasantly - gains some strength in the finish; sweet honeyish and industrial jam-like cloyingness nevertheless keeps dominating even well into the finish, with absolutely no trace of bitterness at all. I am left with an immensely cloying sweetness tenaciously clinging to my teeth and back of the mouth cavity. I have a relatively high esteem of this brewery - not just because it is literally Belgiums oldest, but more so because they have produced many an interesting beer throughout the years, yet this one is obviously obsolete and redundant at the same time. This brings me back to the early days of this century, when overly sweet fruit beers were a hype in Belgium - thank God attention has shifted to hops meanwhile, but apparently this kind of appalling sweetness is still around. I have hated this type of beers for many years and this one fills me with nothing but aversion: the old (pre-2010) version at least had some malt sweetness and therefore beeriness left, regardless of its significantly higher ABV, making me think - Ill never have the chance to re-evaluate - that it was at least among the more complete sweet fruit beers around at the time, but this one goes all the way, eliminating anything in nose or mouth that could allow anyone to recognize it as actual beer. I hate this, this is by far the worst Anker beer I ever had. I can imagine that they were seeking to imitate the success of Bockors Max, Timmermans sweet fruit beers and the like, but a brewery of this stature should know better. Ghastly, to be avoided at all times!

(Anker Boscoli. 33 cl. 3.5%.

(Anker Boscoulis (2010 - ...)) From a bottle at beer festival in Arnhem. Deep red coloured body, clear, with a big and thin pink head on top, with low retention. Aroma of cherries, berries, gummy bears, candy sugar. Taste of cough syrup, berries, strawberries, cherries, candy sugar. thin body high carbonation. Not bad for a fruit beer.

Bottle shared at home with Maakun. Cloudy and chunky brown with deep red hue. Cream head. Strawberry syrup, forest fruit lemonade, cooked red fruits, sugary sweet, fruitmilk. Very sweet but still quite natural. Body is full texture is like fruitjuice, a homemade smoothie. Fizzy carbo. Funny stuff.

Bottle thanks to sjogro. Murky pink brown with big light pink head. Lots of cooked fruits with strawberry, raspberry, red berries. Light milky and a touch of dough. Very sweet and very light sour. Over medium bodied with a thick fruit juice feel. A lot like liquid jam or pure Roosvicee. Not that bad but has nothing to do with beer.
