Alengrin (6007) - BELGIUM - AUG 30, 2017
Extra strong (hence the word ’stout’) porter by this renowned brewery along the famous Bermondsey mile in London, sampled at BXL Beerfest. Lacing, creamy, pale yellowish beige, stable head over a pitch black beer. Aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, espresso, black chocolate, coffee liqueur, bayleaf, dry leather, walnuts, ’jenever’, butterscotch. Dried fruit in the onset, sweetish but not too much so and backed by a deeper sourishness of roasted barley, medium carbonation (perhaps even a tad too fizzy for the style), thick and full, oily mouthfeel, pleasantly rounded, very nutty maltiness with bittering toasted edges, roasted coffee bitterness in the end, spicy, peppery hop bitter back-up and an afterglow of warming, gin-like alcohol. Flawless, rounded and well-bodied, but indeed a modern stout rather than a historical porter - or even a modern imperial porter, from which I expect a bit more malt sweetness and a tad less roasted bitterness.

Zwart bier met licht bruine schuimkraag. Geur: licht zoet, koffie, ietwat cacao. Smaak: bitterzoet, koffie, wat donkere chocolade . Mooi in balans. Redelijk volmondig. Matige koolzuurprikkel. Afdronk: geroosterde mout. Lekker!

Tap at BXL festival. Black with dark beige head. Coffee, dark roasted cocoa beans, ash, soft vanilla, a bit bready, soft minerals. Medium sweet and bitter. Over medium bodied with a bit dry mineral feel and fizzy carbonation. Nice aroma but a bit weird bodied.
