Mata Brown-Boy is a luscious full flavoured amber ale that pours a striking reddish brown. The specialty 4 malt blend brings caramel, toffee-like, malty characteristics balanced by refreshing hop flavour and aroma, medium bitterness and a dash of pepper from NZ’s indigenous horopito. Kiwi magic!!

Not too exciting. But not unpleasant. Nice and herbal for a brown ale. NZ-herbal, spicy and fruity on the aroma and taste. Palate is sticky with a malty finish.

chinchill (5314) - South Carolina, USA - JAN 9, 2014
On tap at the Fork & Brewer in Wellington. Pour was dark brown with excellent clarity and a very good tan head. Mild yet spicy aroma. Flavor also a bit spicy, perhaps a bit much spciing for the malt level. Some spicy NZ hops too. Feel: crisp; near medium body; a bit too much bite. O: very interesting and surprisingly spicy brown ale. Recommended.

a bit weird, has that orangey grapefruit taste that predominated in their blondie as well. not sure if the odd belgian influence is supposed to be infused or it’s just a bit stale...whatever the case, certainly weird. also mild hop bitterness and solid maltiness, but they don’t really fit together much well...completely unbalanced. okay i suppose.

Bottle in Fat Dog, Rotorua
Fizzy red-brown with redcurrant and grapefuit nose, medium bodied with coffee and chocolate but an astringent finish ending quite thin.

Ungstrup (38384) - Citizen of the universe, DENMARK - JAN 2, 2013
Bottled. A brown beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, fruits, and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, bread, and caramel, leading to a bitter finish.

fletchfighters (1573) - AUSTRALIA - NOV 19, 2012
reddish brown color, off white head. Two finger height. Malt, toasted caramel, and nice grapefruit and pine nose. Good aeromatics. Very watery taste, some caramel and malt. Otherwise a very thin taste. Light bodied and medium carbonation. Reasonable but forgetable once had it.

Davros (3282) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - AUG 22, 2012
Pours brown with a small head. Nose shows toasty malt, caramel and nutty notes along with grapefruit, spicy and floral hops. Flavours include toasty malt, bready notes, grapefruit and herbal hops. Could use a lighter body.

Bottle, 10C. Clear reddish amber with a frothy beige head. Aroma of toffee with some nuts and chocolate. Light bodied. Tastes as it smells except for bright pepper and some light Kiwi tropical fruit notes. Moderate bitterness, dry finish. Just a little more body would have been nice, but it’s refreshingly gluggable with some personality.
