Volks Weizenbock combines the strong malty component of a bock bier with the tangy, spiciness of the Hefe Weizen. This beer is brewed 1 1/2 times stronger than our Hefe Weizen and is aged commensurately longer for extra smoothness! Volks Weizenbock is "The Peoples Beer"!

Very hazy amber coloured body with a nice thin tan head on top and a very nice caramel honey colour with a lot of haze at the bottom. Aroma of potent alcohol, yeast, wheat, raisins, figs, pit fruits, nuts and a touch of spice - very potent and nice. Medium to Full-bodied; Potent yeast and wheat flavour with a lot of raisins and pit fruits coupled with some caramel and mellow sweetness. Aftertaste is sweet with a little malt dryness and a touch of the yeast flavours throughout. Overall, a nice weizenbock with good sweetness, some dry and spicy notes and a large malt and yeast presence. Nice to try and pretty respectable for the style! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Market Cellars in Reston, Virginia on 11-December-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 11-January-2011.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy red-amber color. Thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of banana cream pie, yeast and a mustard-like note. The taste is caramel, banana, yeast, bread, spicy notes, leafy bitter hops. Thin-medium bodied. Decent beer.

Pours a cloudy, neutral brown with thin, oily head. Aroma is sweeter than the flavor would suggest, with notes of candy cherry-apple and yeasty cloves and phenols. This is apparently the Hefeweizen recipe jacked up 50%, but at this intensity, there appears to be some overall differences. For one, the moderate banana notes found in the hefe move to the background here, the yeast character is more towards cloves and phenols in the flavor. The flavor has a moderate maltiness, a slightly grainy sweetness that doesnt necessarily taste as astringent as I would expect from a wheat beer. Very good, but still not my favorite. Its tough to beat the Pennypacker Porter! By the way, this has an awesome palate; it is both creamy and frothy up front, with a dry, textured finish.

On tap, at brewery. Clear amber brown body with a fizzy off-white head that fell to a thin film, decent lacing. Nice earthy and husky dark wheat on the nose with some almost rye bread notes. The flavor is not quite yeasty enough but still lots of husky earthy wheat. Still seems like there might be some rye in there. Mouthfeel is maybe a touch thin and not quite soft or full enough. It was still pretty decent, especially for ABC.

Braudog (6579) - Yorktown, Virginia, USA - JAN 12, 2008
Draft at the Gettysburg brewpub. Happy Birthday, honey! Ruddy red with a thin creamy off-white head. Lightly yeasty aroma which is a bit better pronounced in the first sip. Tad tangy with a twinkle of clovey spices and a sweet bready finish. (#3288, 1/11/2008)

3fourths (9299) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 30, 2007
Draft pint at Appalachain in Harrisburg. Poured from the tap a very cloudy (muddy) brown with little to no head. Heavy on the candied banana, sharp alcohol, sharply astringent malts and soggy bread and toast notes up front, with a similar smell. The body on this completely falls apart over the middle, and it finishes with more simple candied banana flavors and a strikingly astringent grain husk note. The alcohol is far too apparent for something of this weight, and overall its just unappealing in all respects.
