At first it’s sort of like a black IPA as in its smooth black and slightly roasted and then moves into a bitter finish that you can expect. Where the surprise happens is after the aftertaste when the intense bitterness consumes and destroys your taste buds. And by bitter, I mean the most intensive bitter taste that hits like a nails and black ash. Incredible. Stuu666 (13124) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - OCT 14, 2014
Bottle at home. Pours dark brown, nose is pine, pineapple, roast malts, taste is similar. Shark_Pants (737) - AUSTRALIA - OCT 4, 2014
Cola colour, small head. Aroma roast meat, grapefruit, caramel, bread, pine, grass. Taste is initially sweet toffee, pine, licorice, then bitter grapefruit and lime and finishes with charred meat. Medium bodied. Very flavourful, quite good. johninmelb (1127) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - MAR 15, 2013
Another seething menace from Arbor. Strong coffee nose with 90% cocoa lindt chocolate and licorice coming through. Pours a deep, dark brown with a fluffy head the colour of a double espresso crema. The flavour follows the nose with rich, dark notes in spades - bitter, bitter cocoa, buttery, burnt malts, more licorice, some aniseed, some flambeed figs, and a long, long, oily finish. Rich, complex, chocolatey, bitter and biting, this is a corker from the best of the new Bristol breed of progressive brewers. berkshirejohn (6451) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - MAR 7, 2013
33cl bottle from Bitter Virtue, Southampton. An opaque black pour with a ruby red glow against the light and a billowing tan head; the aroma is intense with bitter Belgian chocolate and a touch of wood smoke. It’s absolutely bursting with flavour - ripe purple fruit, licorice, burnt treacle, and tar setting the head ringing. The finish is comparitively calm, but full of toasty, deeply roasted malts and rather dry. This is incredibly satisfying and beats the Kernel Scanner Darkly Black IPA I’d just tried hands down.
