Oatmeal and 20 pounds of fresh roasted coffee from the Ugly Mug Cafe contribute to a mildly chalky espresso character balanced by a rich, sweet, creamy maltiness. coffee finish dissolves into chocolate with a slight roasty bitterness. 12oz bottle. Pours deep brown with a small tan head. Rich aroma of sweet chocolate malt and freshly roasted espresso. Flavor begins with very sweet malt, which is then joined by roasted coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is thinner than expected. Not bad, but the flavor doesn’t live up to the aroma.

12 0z bottle - Pours a muddy black color with totally non-existant head. Aroma is fairly roasty, definite coffee notes, bit of vanilla and cherries. Flavor is mildly roasty, with coffee and chocolate, along with a fair amount of lactic sourness. Finish is both tart and fairly bitter.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2008 Pours a thin (for a stout) dark brown, a little translucent – sort of cola-like. Very minimal head. Smells strongly of sweet coffee. Palate is somewhat watery. Flavor is sweet, with definite coffee flavors, also some sourness. Too sweet really, could use a dry finish at least. Taste is not as bold or as mouth-filling as I’d expect from a stout. Interesting and different, but not that great. I keep coming back to this rating - I liked the idea of this beer, but really couldn’t like the beer itself.

Pours a translucent brown in color with no head showing on the pour. Smell is slight coffee and chocolate. Only slight.
Taste is way too sweet. Lactic or maybe infected. Barely enough carbonation to notice. Mouthfeel is thin and unimpressive.

It poured very dark with a thick head that took several minutes to settle down. It smelled delightfully strongly of espresso/coffee and chocolate. It felt thick and syrupy in the mouth, and tasted as strong as it smelled. For being such a thick, heavy beer, I was surprised how drinkable it actually was. A definite buy.

3/29/08: Bottle.
Black-brown body. Aroma of sweet, fresh espresso – really great aroma. Large espresso flavor, thou the finish is slightly watery. Other notes – chewy, oatmeal.

polomagnifico (1202) - Saginaw, Michigan, USA - MAR 18, 2008
12oz bottle. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, malt. Smaller sized tan head that mostly diminished and left little lace. Dark brown/black hue. Flavor starts sweet and then flavors of coffee and chocolate come through to a roasted coffee finish. A little bitter on the finish as well. Palate is light bodied and watery. Kind of an ugly stout but the aroma and flavor is good. Palate was also kind of a let down. Lot’s of potential here if they thicken it up and work on that head retention. All in all not a bad one.

Thanks to Ryan for this one. Black body, fizzy head rose up and then disappeared. Roasted coffee and light chocolate aroma. Flavor is a sour roasted coffee along with a thin body.

Draught at Hop Devil, NYC. Black, lovely lasting brown head. Sweetish cocoa aroma, coffee, cream, some milk and some vanilla. Vanilla and cocoa flavor, creamy, coffee, milky, some hoppy bitterness bringing balance.
