Oatmeal and 20 pounds of fresh roasted coffee from the Ugly Mug Cafe contribute to a mildly chalky espresso character balanced by a rich, sweet, creamy maltiness. coffee finish dissolves into chocolate with a slight roasty bitterness. Brewed with 100% fair-trade coffee from the Ugly Mug Caf and Roastery in Ypsilanti, MI. Pairs well with desserts, especially dark chocolate, raspberries, and cheesecake.

It poured very dark with a thick head that took several minutes to settle down. It smelled delightfully strongly of espresso/coffee and chocolate. It felt thick and syrupy in the mouth, and tasted as strong as it smelled. For being such a thick, heavy beer, I was surprised how drinkable it actually was. A definite buy.

3/29/08: Bottle.
Black-brown body. Aroma of sweet, fresh espresso really great aroma. Large espresso flavor, thou the finish is slightly watery. Other notes chewy, oatmeal.

12oz bottle. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, malt. Smaller sized tan head that mostly diminished and left little lace. Dark brown/black hue. Flavor starts sweet and then flavors of coffee and chocolate come through to a roasted coffee finish. A little bitter on the finish as well. Palate is light bodied and watery. Kind of an ugly stout but the aroma and flavor is good. Palate was also kind of a let down. Lots of potential here if they thicken it up and work on that head retention. All in all not a bad one.

Thanks to Ryan for this one. Black body, fizzy head rose up and then disappeared. Roasted coffee and light chocolate aroma. Flavor is a sour roasted coffee along with a thin body.

Bottle: Pours fairly black with almost no head. Slight aroma of chocolate and coffee (both barely noticable). Smooth drinking (not necessarily a compliment). Not bad.

I didnt think this one was going to be as bad as the reviews that Ive read indicated. I was wrong. Its worse. Looked the part with a pitch black pour and huge head. Really looked good. Smelled sort of funny with a sharp acrid wang to it. Man, after two sips, I had to throw this out. I try to be constructive on my reviews but this was just awful. Watery mouthfeel with an awful sour/old coffee taste to it. I wont be having this one again.
