3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very nice malty and toasty aroma, with a hint of mocha. Appearance is very dark, zero light gets through while in a pint glass, with a nice tan head. The flavor is slightly sweet, with cocoa and milk, some toastyness lingers to balance the sweetness towards the finish.
Bottle. Nose big chocolate and bigger coffee, rich and sultry, mocha, cocoa. Pour dark brown collecting to sub-pitch with a touch of ruby poking out from the bottom, a too-large dark brown head like that of cola. Taste medium-sweet with low-medium bitterness, airy (really should let this one sit for a bit before first sip), more of the expected chocolate and coffee, good gentle roast with a touch of scorch, has bg fruitiness that almost shimmers for its crystal-ness. Fullish body body but not sludgy, seems big without letting on about the alcohol too much. A good one and a probable crowd pleaser, and they’re right about the nearness to food, would be great with raspberries, for instance, either whole or finagled into the beer itself! Pours black with tan head. Aroma of coffee. Taste was sweet roast malt. Smooth and kind of thin. Minimal coffee. This was amateurish. I was not impressed in general with this beer, but especially not after buying a beer with both espresso and breakfast in the name but little coffee in the flavor. Did they mix up the labels or something? I’m not sure I’ll purchase anything from Arbor again. Hopper8 (197) - Holland, Michigan, USA - FEB 12, 2017
Where’s the coffee? I was excited for a beer that was heavy in the coffee flavor, and my first sip made me think I was getting this. Then I had more, and as the beer warmed the coffee disappeared, and so did any complexity in flavor. Not very great. Not awful, but not very great. Msdrbeat (780) - East Lansing, USA - FEB 11, 2017
On tap at Arbor Brewing. Pours very dark. Smooth and decently sweet. Wish there was more biting coffee bitterness. SG111 (1874) - New York, USA - NOV 20, 2016
Bottled. Pours black, huge tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and very bubbly head. I can smell the effervescence. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, roasted malt. Nice coffee bitterness finish. The body is super bubbly. Way too much carbonation. It feels like a soda. Fine. Coffee finish is good, but thin, watery, and way too much carbonation.

Little head and lacing for a breakfast stout. Malty coffee aroma. Little hop bite. Nice and strong espresso flavor and bitterness.

On tap at the Arbor Corner Brew in Ypsilanti, MI. Black pour with small tan head. Aroma and taste of coffee, but perfectly muted. Sweet like a milk stout. Smooth and creamy and easy to drink. b33r (875) - Ohio, USA - MAR 4, 2016
Dark black color with thin light brown head. Aroma has nice roasted malts and rich chocolate. Flavor is smooth, roasted coffee, smooth malts, and dark chocolate bitterness. Slight alcohol presence, which is surprising for only 7.5 abv. Good overall DrSilverworm (9671) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - FEB 23, 2016
12oz bottle. No date, but I’m confident it’s fresh.. Up front, a pretty satisfying, big amount of coffee. Mild nuttiness, good touch of dark chocolate, some roast malt, mild earthiness. Pretty nice flavor. Pours a nearly black color. Thin ring of khaki head. Leaves some dots and bits of lace. Medium to bigger body, kind of mild slick texture. Light carbonation. Some more caramel comes out in the flavor as I go. Moderate-plus sweet taste, light to moderate bitter. Could use a touch more carbonation, and it has a bit more caramel / butterscotch aroma than I’d like, but overall it’s solid. I love a coffee-heavy coffee stout, and this has a satisfying coffee component, and a pretty good body. I’d put it between Troegs Java and Bell’s Java. Nice to enjoy with my subway breakfast. I see now that this is dogged with the scores. I’m thinking with no date, old bottles sit around forever, only to eventually severely disappoint some poor consumer. If these guys want to get serious about attracting the hearts of consumers, they need to start dating their package.
