Very dark brown, sandy brown head and spicy boozey choc nose. Initial taste spicy, soy and brassy bitterness. Carbonation is holding firm and a spriteful boozy mouthfeel. Opaque black - brown beer, big fluffy tan head. Nose of dark chocolate and coffee. Frothy airy palate (slight gush on opening). Mild minerals. Tangy dark malts bordering on sour. Touch of paint like it was barrelled. Nice coffee streak with a little dark chocolate. Mildly fruity finish. Interesting.
Bottle from West Country Ales. Big fat dark nose with figs and raisins and sump oil and treacle. Pours lifeless, black and seething. Quite much pitch black colour, with a small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some liquorice, ripe fruits and mild smoked wet wooden notes. Flavour is liquorice, ripe fruits, some roasted malts as well as mild saltyness and a bit sour black coffee.
0.33 L bottle brought home from Utobeer, London, enjoyed two months past bb date. (Labelled Arbor Ales Freestyle Fridays #2 Approved) Murky black with brown edges. A layer of tanned fish-eyes on top. Heavily roasted malt aroma with bitter chocolate and sour berry tones. Taste is hard roasted black malts with heavy malt bitterness. Espresso and cocoa, little residual sugars. Chalky mouthfeel, quite rough on the palate. Medium full. Lasting, dry and roasty malt-bitter ending. Very flavorfull, and quite so challenging. Bottle at home in London. Pours thick black with a frothy, beige foam head. Really deep roasted malt nose with dirt, soil and seared earth. Also rich cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with hefty dark malts, strong roast character, charred malts, burnt cocoa, bitter dirt. Medium bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Aroma -soft dark roasted malts, chocolate, soft good quality coffee, fruity dark malts, well blended
Taste - soft dark roasted malts, dark fruits, soft bitter chocolate, touch of coffee, bit of burnt wood, lots of fruity dark malts, quite complex
Palate - very soft carb. medium body, smooth texture, touch of warming alcohol on palate, smooth fruity malts and soft woody. Finish as main flavour, smooth, lingering fruity roasted malts
Overall - Really nice smooth mellow gentle imperial stout
