Bottle (leftover from GABF) pored a clear brownish black with a minimal tan head. Aromas of esspresso, roastiness and hints of dark chocolate and vanilla. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of coffee, roasted malt, bitter chocolate and a hint of smoke with a lingering roasty bittersweet finish. Tmoney99 (14460) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 8, 2005

A keeper on cask here. Mocha head on top of very dark brown. Sessionable ABV. Well malted and the bias is on the sweeter side and so drinkable. Cocoa, coffee, mollasses, mild roastiness. Could have more aroma with all of these ingredients. deyholla (11599) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - DEC 20, 2009
Cask at the brewpub. Poured black with a medium brown head. Aroma was full of malts, with chocolate and licorice present. Flavor was full of dark chocolate notes with a bit of raisin underneath, but don’t pick up and sourness as in the description. 3fourths (9345) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 4, 2008
Cask at the brewery. Sweet nose of malted milk balls and dry grains, resembling a dry stout at times. Dark and oily, silky, very fine and quiet on the tongue, with a delicate motor oil silkiness and a light astringency to the roasted malts. Fairly good, and I think the cask adds a lot to this beer. Vanilla aroma. Black strong in alcohol and a little rich on the palate. Fruity with a crisp and slightly dry coffee roast finish. BBB63 (6557) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - FEB 13, 2005
Hand-pull at pub: Presents a deep brown hue with ruby highlights, a small creamy head and very nice coating of the glassware. The nose has a lot of malt notes both sweet mocha and roasted smoky character. Also got a whiff of raisin, coffee, and a very earthy ester, nice! The taste starts with a chocolate like sweetness followed by a drier bitter finish with some coffee undertone. A tad smoky and fruity as well, very nicely balanced. The feel was smooth and a bit creamy, not flat but not aggressive either. This is one well put together brew that seem more of a hybrid style of sweet stout crossed with a baltic porter. I enjoy this one a lot! A must try if in the area.
