(bottle) Pours a dark brown color with thick tan head that clings to glass. Aroma of mild hops and toasted malts. The flavor is bitter hop mellowed by the roasted malt and some alcohol noted. Smooth palate. bth122 (1704) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 3, 2014
Bottle. Poured a chocolate color. Aroma is inriquing. Brown sugar, cocoa, roast malt, caramel, biscuit. Creamy texture. Medium light bitterness. Bitter finish on dry side. Average carbonation. Starts off like a porter but really finishes like a ipa. Not bad.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with an enormous foamy dark tan head that lingered forever and left good lacing. The aroma was bitter anise, floral hops, a bit of vanilla and a touch of dark fruits. The flavor was very bitter, dry and roasty with a malty undertone and notes of anise, Pine-sol and floral hops. Long roasty, bitter and dry finish with lingering anise and floral hops. Medium body. Meh. BrownALEx (459) - Portland, Michigan, USA - DEC 24, 2013

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2016 12 oz bottle. The pour is a nice dark, dark brown, with ruby hues around the edges. There wasn’t a lot of head, and the lace that was left was spotty, at best. The aroma is more malty and perhaps a touch of caramel than hops. Not really what I was expecting for a black DIPA. The flavor mimicked that aroma. Not overwhelmingly powerful in the hop character. It’s pretty solid, but missing out on a lot of the good IPA characters. It’s almost like a thin porter than a black IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone jeremyh70 (1115) - Missouri, USA - NOV 19, 2013
Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights, a huge tan head that overflowed the glass after only emptying half the bottle. Retention was great leaving a big creamy dollop behind and great lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel and biscuit with some dark fruit. Taste caramel and fig with some roastiness and a bit of smoke and pine bitterness. Finished semi dry with lingering smooth bitterness. Mouthfeel is soft and medium bodied with a medium high carbonation. My bottle was 7 months old so was probably passed its prime and lost some of its hop character. Was decent. 12oz. bottle. Aroma of piney, earthy, lightly fruity hops and dark, roasty, toasty malts, with notes of spruce, faint cocoa and cola. Clear deep, dark brown in color with a very slight head. Flavor profile is nicely balanced with nutty, bittersweet, roasted malts, faint molasses and licorice, piney, floral, earthy hops and a moderately strong dosage of hop spice and bitterness towards the long finish. Full and very lightly warming on the palate, body is just substantial enough. Interesting and tasty rendition.
