Travel to a time of brewer’s lore, when smoke was spelled "smoake," when dark beers held the collective hearts and mind of the people of merry old England. Believe it or not, back in the 1850s, Porter ruled the beer world, and no one brewed Porter like the brewers of London. Drawing their water from the Thames, blending old and new batches, and experimenting with new types of malt, Porter evolved throughout the years, and probably at one time held some substantial smoakiness. Arcadia’s London Porter draws on this rich historic tradition, but adds a few special twists to make it all our own. The flavor of London Porter is multi-layered, starting with a bold, pleasing sweetened coffee richness, which gives way to round and subtle smoke, much like a delicately smoked ham. Porcine sweetness is capped by a gloss of fig jam or cherry compote, fruity and complex. Faint pear and hay notes barely poke through, reminders that there are some delightful American Glacier hops under all the finery.

12oz bottle from Artusory. This dark brown ale poured with a rich creamy tan head, with a chocolate malt aroma. The chocolate does, indeed, dominate the flavor, but it complements the nice smoky porter base. There is a chalky, slightly bitter finish that lingers pleasantly on the palate.

Thank you Linus_stick/Alan for this one! It’s black/brown with a light brown, creamy head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, caramel and dark fruits. The flavour is nice and chewy with notes of roasted malt, dark fruits, slightly bitter coffee, light chocolate and the finish is dry and bitter. It’s like it starts out very full and chewy, but at the end of each sip, it becomes thinner. That is a little minus for my overall impression of this otherwise very nice porter.

UPDATED: MAY 17, 2007 The Lure:
Dry roastiness and dark chocolate frown at the grainy, rice-like personas hanging in the back. Raisins and figs try to shift their attention, but fail after a while.

The Festivities:
Roasted malt gives bitterness and flavor to coat the dark chocolate, as smoke slowly rises in the background. Body and flavor intensity are satisfying throughout. Well-done no doubt, but nothing special was in my bottle. After a few bottles now, I’m not sure this ages or travels well. Some have been decent but boring, some have been very good, others unpleasant in the nose, but highly pleasurable once tasted.

A hard-working employee obviously deserves a reputation for reliability.

Tap at HDG. Dark black beer with a thin off-white head. Fantastic aroma, deep bitter coffee aroma, dark molasses, toast malt and hint of caramel coated plums and dark chocolate. LIngering herbal hop flavour throughout the sweet chewy malts. Lingering chocolate and soft roastiness. Well done.

[407-20070707] Bottle (c/o DuctTape). Chocolate aroma. Dark brown black body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Flavour continues chocolate malt with some coffee. Pretty smooth full body. Very nice chocolatey brew.

12oz bottle. ABV listed as 7%. Nearly pitch-black color, minimal light tan head. Little dots of lace. Good, thick aroma... This could pass for a stout, easily. Nice, crisp carbonation. Good aftertaste, nice bitter dark chocolate aroma. Very drinkable! Some warmth, but great roastiness.

Bottle thanks to Tom. Pours a pure black color with a medium light brown head. The aroma is nice; massive milky chocolate, light fruit, light coffee and smoke. A great flavor; dark fruit, metallic roasted malts, smoke, chocolate, smooth and full. Great! Fruity, smoky and heavily roasted. Yet, very easy to drink.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2010 What a rich and sweet smoky aroma full of smoked plums, grapes, tar, licorice and dark roast coffee. Very refreshing and sweet black flavor, coating the mouth with a thick oilfull of roasted fruits, smoked meats and grains and finishing off with a malty-sweet coating. A very fine porter.

Draft to taster at Arcadia in Kalamazoo. Looks good; a lightly translucent very dark amberish brown with very light beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; dark malt and dark chocolate with light notes of coffee and smoke, and a touch of caramel. Tastes like it smells with a medium-bodied mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
