Travel to a time of brewers lore, when smoke was spelled "smoake," when dark beers held the collective hearts and mind of the people of merry old England. Believe it or not, back in the 1850s, Porter ruled the beer world, and no one brewed Porter like the brewers of London. Drawing their water from the Thames, blending old and new batches, and experimenting with new types of malt, Porter evolved throughout the years, and probably at one time held some substantial smoakiness. Arcadias London Porter draws on this rich historic tradition, but adds a few special twists to make it all our own. The flavor of London Porter is multi-layered, starting with a bold, pleasing sweetened coffee richness, which gives way to round and subtle smoke, much like a delicately smoked ham. Porcine sweetness is capped by a gloss of fig jam or cherry compote, fruity and complex. Faint pear and hay notes barely poke through, reminders that there are some delightful American Glacier hops under all the finery.

Chocolate and roasted malts dominate the aroma. A beautiful brown head held steady for a few minutes atop the deep brown ale. Its taste is a hint of sweetness followed by medium bitterness, but not too bitter to upset the balance. Well bodied for an English Porter, the texture is slick, carbonation is average, and finish is long. London Porter is well done, and worth a try if you can find it.

A smokey malt and coffee aroma, pours a dark brown color without much of a head. A full bodied oily mouth feel with a taste of smoked malt and coffee. A slightly bitter coffee finish.

In the glass it dark cocoa color with a medium head. Aroma of smoke, and some malts and a touch of cocoa. The taste is smooth with roasted malts, chocolate and some caramel. Not as thick as I thought. Good finish.

An Imperial London Porter. So, okay, I guess that is a thing. Either way, good beer.

Poured into a perfect pint. 3.75 A: Black color. Two fingers of frothy light brown head. Retention is about average and a lot of lacing is left. 4.0 S: This smells mainly of tangy roastiness with smoky components. Im not sure if this is a smoked beer or not, but it certainly seems that way. Aside from that, theres plenty of chocolate with some caramel and molasses. I keep getting a whiff of pig, so I have to assume this is smoked. Smells good. 3.75 T: Taste is like the nose. Tangy roastiness, campfire and porcine smoke, chocolate. Underneath is caramel, molasses, and maybe a touch of dark fruits. 3.75 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Pleasant creaminess makes this go down quite smoothly. 3.75 D: Solid beer all around. No complaints. DavoleBomb, Jul 09, 2013

On tap at Molly Malloys in Philly on 6/19. Aroma of coffee and roast malt. Flavors of dry cocoa, coffee, toaster malt, smoke, licorice with a trace of booze. Delicious.

12 oz bottle. This unassuming brew is nearly perfect. Just the right taste of coffee and molasses pair perfectly with some smokey malted goodness. Just wish my bottle had WC on it instead of what I got.
