   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 6/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 12/20
Nephilium (1821) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - JAN 30, 2013
Sweet malt aroma, with hints of dark fruit. Pours a hazy reddish-brown, with a quickly fading light tan head. Very malt forward, with a bit of a bite to it. The dark fruit is there, as well as some astringency. The palate is slick, even as the body is a bit thin. I’m glad I tried it, but I probably would not pick this up again.

Oramge brown pour no head. Some bourbon and fig aroma. Moderate body and carbonation. Not a ton of barrel but enough that compliments dark fruit and caramel flavors. Not bad Seems mellow but good.

From notes. Enjoyed at the Ashley’s Rare & Vintage Beer TasteFest on June 07. Poured from a 22 oz wax-capped bomber. The pour is a nice ruby color with some light orange hues poking through. There is a nice thin white head and no lace. The aroma is really nice. There is a good malt character and a great addition of dark fruits. It seems a little thin in the back end of the nose with not much booze coming through. The deep end of the draw possesses a nice molasses sweetness. The flavr is a little more heated than the nose lets on. There is still a good soft fruitiness and a great sweet malt backbone. The mouth feel is definitely thin, with a light carbonation and a solid, sweet, lingering aftertaste. Well done.

Red waxed 22oz bomber share courtesy of dcschiller pours with a deep copper looking body that has amber hues and supports a tan head. The aroma offers up sweet prunes, plum juice, sweet red apple slices, brown sugar, molasses and then a bit of booze near the end of the draw. The taste starts smooth with molasses running into brown sugar, prunes, sweet cherries and a mild boozy kick. There’s a dash of roasted malts that surfaces briefly toward the finish. Solid brew. Nice smooth rich sipper.

Bomber. Garnet more on the ruby side with a quickly dissipating tan head. Big toffee, caramel, plum and booze aromas. Lots of dried fruits and some alcohol heat. Silky smooth.

Aroma is very fruity with quite a bit of fig and prune with lighter plum and raisin notes. Medium strong caramel notes with some light toasted bread. Hints of alcohol. As it warms there are hints of darker malts and a tootsie roll type aroma. Pours a murky brown with some copper and amber highlights. Faint light tan head that quickly recedes to the edges. No lacing but some medium sized legs. Flavor is moderately sweet and again has a lot of fruit to it, but more plum and prune than fig and raisin. Moderate caramel note with a medium light toasted bread character. Light toffee and a hint of chocolate along with a faint roast character. Light oxidation setting in with a touch of a paper character. Medium bitterness. Lingering caramel, prune and raisin as well as the tootsie roll flavor. Alcohol is surprisingly well hidden but is present late palette. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium low carbonation; its a bit silky. Low but present astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall an alright beer but I would expect something more from a beer held for 3 years then released as a special one off. The fruit notes were fairly dominant and there was a bit too much oxidation showing through. The name character was pretty nice but I wish it played a more prominent role and was perhaps a bit fresher.
