Notes from summer. Draft. Pours black. Aroma and taste are bourbon, oak, and citrus and pine bitterness. koleminer20 (3845) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - AUG 31, 2015
From notes. Enjoyed this at the MBG Winter Beer Fest. The pour is a great dark brown/light black color with a decent tan head and some great lacing. This is what a great Black IPA should look like. The aroa is pretty heavy on the bourbon, but there is a nice molasses, light hop, and some dark fruits. This almost comes across like a barley wine. The flavor is a lot more roasty. There is still a ton of bourbon. The hops and the roasted malts kind of get drowned out through the finish. The mouth feel is pretty good. It’s a little over carbonated, which comes off light and bubbly, but the aftertaste is roasty and lightly bitter to go along with that bourbon burn arminjewell (9720) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - AUG 4, 2015
Pour on tap at HopCat, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark cocoa, roast, some toffee into some slight dank, pine notes, some bourbon comes through with sweet vanilla. Taste was sweet chocolate, vanilla, bourbon into slight fruits, orange, hints of pine, grass, some roast, finishing bitter, slightly sweet. Petkus331 (389) - Redford, Michigan, USA - JUN 26, 2015
On cask at Arcadia. Aroma is sweet, of molasses with a citrusy clementine background and some dark fruit and beet sugar I would expect in a dark Belgian - mellow hoppiness comes out as it warms up; some oaky whiskey up front. Thick lace curtains, coffee black, visually beautiful. Tastes like a dark Belgian to me, dark fruit play a large role while coffee is in the background and citrus lightens it up. Texture is a touch fizzier than watery. Overall, I am very pleased.

On cask at brewery. Dark purple red. Great lacing and lingering head. Sweet boozey nose if dark fruit. Full but syrupy body. Tastes like a dark Belgian -- dates, dark fruits, sweet malting. flatmatt (1604) - Northville, Michigan, USA - MAR 17, 2015
On tap at Hopcat Ann Arbor. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Aromas of bourbon, molasses, spirits in general, cocoa powder. Bourbon, spirit alcohol flavor with roasty coffee and cocoa. Quite nice. smroush (298) - Michigan, USA - MAR 11, 2015
Very dark bown, pretty much black actually, in color.
The aroma is really dominated by the bourbon barrel flavors. There are some bread and toffee flavors from either the bourbon barrel or the malt. Though this is billed as a black IPA, I found the hop flavors very subdued.
The alcohol is pretty heavy; the body full; the sweetness moderate. The finish is long and dominated by the bourbon flavors.
What I liked about this beer: the bourbon flavors add some real interest to this beer.
What I don’t like: the bourbon flavors almost totally dominate this beer, so much so that both the hops and malt are quite subdued into the background. Frankly I think the beer is too lightweight for the bourbon barrel aging. umich03jm (3513) - Flat Rock, Michigan, USA - FEB 27, 2015
Tap at Hopcat Ann Arbor. Black pour with a small foamy head that fades to a messy film and leaves tons of webbing. Aroma is mostly just straight up bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Hints of roast and chocolate come through. Taste is the same. Loads of bourbon but it’s still smooth. Hints of roast and pine. Not bad but it comes off like a thin BB stout that’s a bit boring. On tap at Reno's east. Bourbon barrel helped the aroma and mouthfeel of the b craft but muddied everything else. Rare occasion where I like the non BB version better. Less hoppy and more malty but super hot.
