Bottle from Aldis, Inverurie. It pours clear deep brown with a medium off-white head. The aroma is earthy, roasted malt, cherry drops, sweet, sticky and malt loaf. The taste is pretty, dry, charred roast, earthy, leathery, ashy, bitter - sweet, peppery spice, fruit cake and cherry drops with a very dry finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Not sure the balance is there. Fairly basic stuff.

tombyars (1640) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - SEP 27, 2016
Purchased this in Aldis Salcoats on the 25th September 2016. Poured into chalice glass, clear pale garnet in colour with a thin white head. Fresh zesty pink grapefruit aroma with malty undertones. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts deliver a weak maltloaf base with strong redcurrant fruit apparent. Dry citrus hop present in the short bitter aftertaste which compliments the fruit. Finish is rather thin and lacking in complexity, it is just on the malty side - only just though, with dry woody briar and citrus pith on the palate. Not detecting any chocolate notes in this though and it reminded me of a Black IPA in style?

Dark ruby colour, head disappears very quickly. Light aroma slight maltiness. Tastes malty chocolate malt, dark crystal, small amount of roasted barley, little mouthfeel. Long cloying sweetness that remains coated to the mouth.

Bottle shared at home - cheers Steven! Pours clear brown with good off-white head. Aromas of roasted malts, caramel, toffee - really good nose. Taste follows through, but not entirely. Good carbonation. A well made dark ale, closer to an old fashioned porter than a bitter though...

50cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours a dark honey colour with a slim but nice head. The nose has an earthiness with a biscuity-toffee note. The taste has more of the toffee biscuits and again theres a background earthiness. The palate has a medium body and texture and then unfortunately it falls off a cliff somewhat. Overall, the nose was great but overall, its just so so - the style is somewhere between a bitter and a Scotch ale.
