UPDATED: JUL 13, 2005 This pours a deep ruby/brown with a lasting fine-bubbled head. There’s a certain medicinal quality followed by a grapefruit-ish middle, and a piney dryness in the tail. I wish I’d had an opportunity to try this on draft while I was in CA. Didn’t have the ’pop’ I expected. Lots of bitterness and flavor hopping. Woody, earthy malt/hop balance is nice. Overall quite satisfying and balanced, but I’ve had beers far more arrogant than this.

Well, one of my first in the world of high gravity. I loved the ad campagin and upon recent review still think that that’s what sells it. Don’t get me wrong the malt is huge and very complex, however I can’t believe this has been fully attenuated. The hops are aggresive, almost charred earth in their finish and certainly not shy about bitterness. But, it takes no talent to dump too many hops in the kettle. I don’t think my mind has been completely made up, maybe I just question my tastings of old.

The malt is out the wazoo and it is sour as an ale can be. Add in some unfiltered skunk-glad extract and gutter water. It smells of swampy soil and alcohol, but tastes horrid. I’ll never drink this stuff again. Strong ales are usually just more cereal and stronger, but this one adds a complex assortment of really nasty flavors. Why the hell does anyone like this crap? Sampled on tap at RFD Washington. It poured to a huge, thick, creamy beige head atop a mahogany body. EXCELLENT lacing. The aroma is caramelly, doughy, bready, sweet, and alcoholic. The flavor has huge sweet malts. Toffee, floral hops are there but not exceedingly strong. The palate has a slight stickiness to it. Slight bitterness as well. Medium mouthfeel. Ruby/copper colored pour with a thin layer of creamy off-white head. First whiff makes me think of a nice west-coast IPA with the grapefruit/citrus hop presence. There was also a mild malty sweetness in there. Hops are dominant from the nose all the way through the nice drawn-out finish. Flavor picks up grapefruit, some alcohol, and a little woodiness. Smooth mouthfeel.. just a little oily. Malts certainly have a presence here, but much more in body than flavor. Slight warming effect as it goes down. Dark reddish copper colour with thick rocky tan head. Sour malt nose with slight alcohol notes. Bitter malt taste with bitter finish and slight warming alcohol notes.
