COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth.

Dark red with hints of brown, with a crown of mocha colored lace that puffed back up to a solid head after only a swirl. For a relatively old sample (bought ~10 months ago), the smell was quite fresh. Sugary and resinous hop aromas made me think of a cross between a Barleywine and a Scotch ale. It came down like an easy drinking Barleywine, too, having the complexities I like, but with restrained cloyness and not too boozy. It’s malty, chewy and has a light, almost crack caramel flavor. The aftertaste is an interesting amalgam of sensations on my tongue; it’s candi sweet on the tip, the bitterness bites you on the sides and on the gums, and the back is bone dry. Nothing takes command, nothing overpowers, no nerve endings get scrambled. I’ve scarcely encountered an american Beer over 7% with this much balance. I’d call it a "complete" Beer.

Bottled. Sampled at Peculier Pub, N.Y. Red-ish colour. Piney, citrusy nose. Big hop profile but with the malt very present. Full mouthfeel. Notes of apples, oranges and caramel. Little roasted as well. Big dry finish.

Pours brown with a white head. Aroma is hoppy, hoppy, hoppy, with just a bit malty sweetness. Taste is bitter, aromatic, flowery, with just enough body to make this beer . . well, a very good bastard

Pours a dark mahogany colour with a big frothy head. Huge floral hop aroma. Nice thick mouthfeel. Great heavily hopped malt taste. If you like a good hop bite and lingering hop aftertaste this is a good one

NIce brown pour with a medium off white head to it. Nice nutty caramely smell that is also present in the taste nice syrupy feel to it. It’s like a thick brown ale real nice.

this is an overly-hopped barley wine, bottle thanks to crosling. dry-hopped with something west coast, maybe centennial? just like the description it’s aggressive with grapefruit everywhere and piney resins dominating the mouthfeel. tons of residual bitterness to counteract a lot of malt--maybe a bit too bitter to drink all that often....

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2006 poured a gorgous dark amber/red with thick creamy head. smelled hoppy and sweet with citrus, malt and fruit aromas. tasted much the same. strong bite, nice and spicey from the hops with a rich malty depth. a great ale.
