Production in Japan was stopped in September 2015. If you have a dark Asahi beer after that, it is Dry Black.

Bottle & can: Pasteurised.
Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahis pure cultured yeast.
Japans favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, its brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

It is dark, it is also nearly tasteless. I drank a lot of these right from the get go over a lengthy period hoping it would get better. They never stuck their necks out. The irony is that Japanese as a whole like big flavours but the major breweries just hang on to the old standbys like Bud and Busch and Coors and Miller or who ever they are these days. This is not a good example of anything.

Aroma is roasted malts and mild grainy sweetness. The flavor is roasted/dark malts, mild grainy sweetness in the middle, mild fruit and a bit of acidity in the finish.

Bottle. Dark Reddish Brown in colour. Very Malty; roasty malts, caramel, liquorice. Asahi use roast barley malts, rice and maize. Sweet roast malty throughout. OK. Easy drinking (2010-05)

334ml bottle. Pours a clear red-brown with a medium, short lived, tan head that laces. Sweet aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Sweet flavour of roasted malt and nuts with a dry, mildly bitter, metallic finish. Light body with a watery texture and soft carbonation.

Light roasted malt nose with some toasted caramel. Sweet but not overly so. Some weird notes as it warms: fishy and slightly natto like. Not bad overall though.

Tap @ Tokyo Bird, Sydney. Doesn't have the malt complexities of the German dunkels, but a good, lightish quaffing style, perfect for slamming back without thinking too much with good bar food. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
